  • First loss of the season

Garth Meyer, Whitman County Gazette|Updated Jan 7, 2021

PULLMAN – What would decide a double-overtime game between two PAC-12 early season contenders last Saturday night in Pullman? A ball thrown off an opponent’s thigh to save a possession? A tip-away steal on the dribble in the last minute of regulation? The lingering effect of a technical on WSU coach Kyle Smith an hour-and-a-half earlier? None of the above – it was a banked-in three-pointer from the top of the key, Arizona winning 86-82. The silence that followed in the no-fa...

  • For what it's worth

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Jan 7, 2021

A few weeks ago I was listening to a sports radio program that was focusing on the career of Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson. The host was doing some comparisons to Drew Brees and Tom Brady. He was telling his audience how Wilson would need to play until he was in his 40’s and throw more passes to be in the same statistical league with the two future hall of famers. What he was getting to was what Wilson would need to be to also be considered for the NFL Hall of...

  • NAZI GERMANY ENTERS RITZVILLE

    Dede Boyer, of Ritzville|Updated Jan 7, 2021

It has come to my attention that someone reported “Jakes” for allowing the truckers to come in and eat. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? These road heroes are on the road and in their trucks 8- 10-and even 12 hours at time, in rain, snow, ice, and fog, to make sure when you go to the store to buy food, (medicine, tools, firewood,) or whatever you need, is there for you to buy! Not to mention all the trucks on the road to bring what you need to your home so YOU won’t have to drive in all that weather. And YOU have the audacity to say N...

  • Here's to a happy and better new year

Mark Schoesler, Washington State Senate|Updated Jan 7, 2021

Despite this difficult and challenging year, I hope all of you were able to enjoy Christmas and the holiday season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many families couldn’t gather with relatives, which made the holidays feel less enjoyable and more distant. Like so many of you, my wish for 2021 is for COVID-19 to be under control so that we all may resume our normal lives. The year 2020 has brought suffering and hardship to many here in our communities, and throughout America and...

    Don C. Brunell, Contributor|Updated Jan 7, 2021

While the coronavirus and its devastating effects on people and economies worldwide were unfortunately the top 2020 stories, the massive impact of western wildfires can’t be ignored. It was catastrophic. The National Interagency Fire Center’s western states tally shows a record 8.6 million acres were incinerated in 2020 compared with 4.6 million acres in 2019. In Washington just over 700,000 acres were burned; however, California and Oregon were not as fortunate. By com...

OLYMPIA – Governor Jay Inslee’s 2021-23 proposed state transportation budget calls for a shift of hundreds of millions of dollars in transportation funding to pay for court-ordered fish passage projects. A 2013 U.S. District Court injunction requires the state to significantly increase the effort for removing state-owned culverts that block habitat for salmon and steelhead by 2030. “Drivers have the right to be upset by Inslee’s proposed shift of highway-project funding,” Senator Mark Schoesler of Ritzville said. Schoesler...
