    Roger Harnack, Publisher|Updated Jan 28, 2020

SPOKANE VALLEY – As the Legislature opened its 60-day session, Republicans outside Olympia lined up behind Rep. Matt Shea, saying he's being "Trumped" by Democrats and Republican Minority Leader J.T. Wilcox. During the last week, at least three counties' Republican committees voted to support Shea and chastise Wilcox. Cowlitz County Republicans approved their resolution Monday night. On Sunday, the 26th Legislative Republican District Committee, which represents part of P...

  • Bringing rail service back to Ritzville

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 14, 2020

A passenger train hasn't stopped regularly in Ritzville for nearly 50 years, but a committed group of citizens is looking to change that fact after recent movement at both the state and local level. The newly found interest in bringing back passenger rail service to Ritzville began last year, when $250,000 was set aside in the state's $10 billion 2019-21 transportation budget to conduct a study of the feasibility of an east-west intercity passenger rail system. The proposed...

  • Two Bronco wrestlers take home first place finishes in Coulee City

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 8, 2020

It was, by most measures, a very successful weekend for the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague wrestling squad at the Banks Lake Brawl in Coulee City, with two of the team’s grapplers winning their brackets and three others finishing in the top four. Juniors Jay Harder and Jeffrey Staley were LRS’ first-place finishers, both winning three consecutive matches to get the job done. In the 220-pound weight class, Harder cut through his opponents like a warm slab of butter, pinning his first two opponents just 17 seconds into the first period...

  • Lady Broncos win in blowouts, improve to 4-1 in league play

    Jeremy Burnham, Reporter|Updated Jan 8, 2020

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague girls basketball team rang in 2020 with a home win over Asotin Friday night, 64-21, and a 59-46 road win against Reardan on Saturday. Friday’s win over Asotin was a one-sided affair from the start. The Lady Broncos took the lead for good just 10 seconds into the first quarter when Dakota Killian scored from the post. Not liking what she saw on the court, Asotin head coach Krisi Pratt called a timeout just three minutes into the game. It didn’t seem to pay off as Asotin turned the ball over on its...

  • Broncos match win total from last season with league sweep

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 8, 2020

What a difference a year can make for the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos basketball program. Just one year removed from a season where the team went 8-15 with an early exit in the conference tournament, the Broncos matched last season's win total with a 43-31 win in Reardan over the weekend, which followed a 67-49 home victory over Asotin the day before. Offensively, the Broncos were led by the same trio of players in both games; seniors Austin Thompson and Spencer Gering,...

  • Column: Sulfur standard aims to curtail maritime fuel oil

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Jan 8, 2020

With the new decade comes an international air pollution regulation which hastens the switch from high sulfur fuel oil to either diesel or LNG in ocean-going ships. The mandate drops the sulfur content from 3.5 to .5%. While that number sounds trivial, it is applied to 62,000 vessels worldwide. Ship owners and environmental regulators battled over the sulfur limit for years; however, starting on January 1, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented it as...

  • Worst Seat In The House: The long wait

    Dale Anderson, Sports Columnist|Updated Jan 8, 2020

When you have that many bowl games you hope that at least some of them would be exciting and fun to watch. 40 bowl games are a bit much and when that many 6-6 teams make it to a bowl game you know that there is a good chance that the teams that got bowl eligible by winning six games might just finish the season with a losing record. There were a couple of head coaches that went to a bowl game which they probably said they would accomplish in an interview for a job and then...

Adams County’s federal representatives had a mixed reaction to the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani on Jan. 3, mostly falling along party lines. Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, was killed in the early morning hours of Jan. 3 in Iraq, the evening of Jan. 2 in the U.S. He and nine others died after a U.S. drone fired several missiles at two vehicles that were driving on an access road at the Baghdad International Airport.
