    Updated Aug 4, 2011

To the Editor: Here are some questions to ask each candidate seeking reelection to Ritzville city government: 1. How do you recommend the proposed $6.3 million water related loans be repaid? Follow-up questions to No. 1: 1.a. Tell us about your remarks in city council meetings regarding the repayment of these loans? 1.b. • District could have saved strategic planning money

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

To the editor, I read with interest the article that stated Sandy Champion received $18,619 for facilitating the strategic plan document. It is my understanding that the hospital pays a monthly fee for QHR consulting company. Could the strategic plan been developed with this company facilitating the plan? Would it have been free as part of the contract with QHR or done at a reduced rate? I was just wondering. Kris Schwisow, Ritzville...

  • New hospital is unnecessary, employees need to live in the district

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

To the editor, We do not need a new hospital with a pharmacy and who knows what else. We have a perfectly good pharmacy here. Bring the jobs back from Spokane where the costs are much higher. Stop hiring all these new people for departments we did not have before. Stop hiring people who do not wish to live in District 2 and stop paying commuting costs. There is much less work to do and that will not stop soon. If the hospital needs updating do it with the money the taxpayers already paid if there is money still. Bring the...

  • Celebrate the ‘gold standard’ of infant feeding this week

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

To the editor, Aug. 1-7 is the time set aside each year when 120 countries celebrate World Breastfeeding Week. Most everyone is aware of the health benefits for breastfed infants including less ear infections, less pneumonia, higher IQ, less diabetes and less obesity. Breastfeeding moms benefit by lowering their risk of breast cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and postpartum depression. We know the benefits; what are we doing to promote breastfeeding in our community? Washington state has some of the highest initiation rates of...

  • Hospital district’s plan reads differently than state’s

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

To the editor, The Strategic Plan for Washington State Rural Health Care, which was linked to this plan to ensure like methodologies, reads completely differently than EARH’s plan. The state wants the small Critical Care Hospitals to be primary care givers and establish links with and not duplicate regional services. The EARH plan reads like EARH wants to be a regional hospital. To accomplish this, that would require a customer base that is in my opinion unattainable. It does not seem as anyone would drive toward Ritzville f...

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

Each year 4-H members across America work hard to complete their Record Books. • Ritzville Blues Fest ends, committee votes to fund music scholarship, plans future financial contributions

    Jennifer Larsen|Updated Aug 4, 2011

A Ritzville event has celebrated its last hurrah after 18 years of bringing top-notch, national blues music to the downtown area. The Ritzville Blues, Brews and BBQs committee voted to discontinue the event after about seven hours of discussion on July 31 at the annual exit meeting. It was a difficult conclusion for committee members to arrive at, especially when most have been involved with the event for more than 10 years, but in the end it was a decision based on the current situation of funding sources getting fewer and c...

  • Finally Underway - Wait for harvest should be worth it, high yields predicted

    Updated Aug 4, 2011

This year’s grain harvest may be the latest in recent memory due to a long, wet spring that has caused minor headaches for area producers. In May, the USDA issued a stripe rust update and now some farmers are discovering foot rot as they rumble into fields for harvest – all of which reduce yields. John Anderson, manager of Ritzville Warehouse Company, said harvest started on July 22 in the Sandhills for the grain company. As of Monday, he said that less than 10 percent of the...
