RITZVILLE – Nobody appeared at the March 15 City Council meeting for a public hearing concerning high-priority sewer collection system improvements. According to city officials, the high-priority sewer collection system improvements consist of six prioritized problem areas identified by staff. The first priority includes seven connections in the area of Palouse Street and Eighth Avenue, officials said. At that location, there is no city access to the existing sewer lines and the exact location of mains and services are u...

  • Live to play…

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Mar 22, 2022

The NCAA tournament has gotten to be my source for reality TV because it is real. There are no scripts to follow. Sure, there are game plans but the other team may mess up those really good ones and all of a sudden the team has to ad lib. And don’t forget the emotions. We’ve seen how being a high seed may not mean much. Kentucky, a number 2 seed gets beat in the first round by 15 seed St. Peter’s. It took overtime but overtime should have favored UK but it didn’t. By the way...

  • State: No spring bear hunt

    The Journal|Updated Mar 22, 2022

OLYMPIA – A deeply divided state Fish and Wildlife Commission voted not to establish a 2022 spring black bear special permit season. The 5-4 vote took place during meetings Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19. The decision to not offer a spring bear special permit won’t impact the fall black bear general season from Aug. 1 to Nov. 15, officials said. Following the vote, the agency’s staff said it will review the possibility of offering spring seasons in future. During the meeting, the commission also approved the purchase of mo...

Future of golf course is strong The “Future of golf course uncertain” story in the March 9, 2022, edition of The Journal has caused confusion in the community as the sub-title “Operator, city go separate ways” is inaccurate. Golf Course Manager Dan Duff is the operator and oversees the operation of the city’s golf course and clubhouse. The city still maintains an agreement with Duff. The city has not renewed a lease agreement for the restaurant. The city continues to accept proposals from businesses who want to explore h...

  • Repeal is the only real fix for long-term-care

Elizabeth Hovde, Washington Policy Center|Updated Mar 22, 2022

As predicted, there was a whirlwind of activity in the first few weeks of the legislative session related to the WA Cares Fund. That’s the name of a new social program the state’s legislative majority created in 2019 — and that voters said “no” to in an advisory vote. It will soon bring workers in our state a new payroll tax of 58 cents for every $100 of wages. A delay of the long-term-care law that mandates the program and its tax was secured in the passage of House Bil...

  • We should bolster Alaskan defenses

    Don C. Brunell, Contributor|Updated Mar 22, 2022

Return Alaska to Russia? A month ago, such lunacy wasn’t news worthy, but after Russia shockingly invaded Ukraine, anything is possible. The assault on Ukraine has been massive and brutal. Civilians continue to be targeted and thousands have been killed. Apartment complexes, stores, and nuclear power plants are being bombed and hospitals, orphanages and children’s theaters are being shelled. Just as worrisome is Vladimir Putin threatens to use nuclear weapons. The game changer...
