  • Next Steps

    Dale Anderson|Updated Mar 5, 2015

I know a few people, including me, that were mighty disappointed Saturday night when they witnessed the Gonzaga Bulldogs take one on the chin to the BYU Cougars. I don’t care how good a team is it is very difficult to go through a league season undefeated. Sure it was senior night but those special games are a lot like Homecoming contests where the focus of the game can be lost on the festivities. There are a lot of butterflies that are carried onto the court with family m...

  • Federal budget needs to be managed

    Updated Mar 5, 2015

Imagine if someone used a credit card, but instead of their own name, your children’s names were on the card. It sounds absurd: no right thinking person would consign their children to pay debts they had no choice in incurring. Yet that is how the federal government operates when it comes to borrowing money from your children and grandchildren to spend today. Our national debt has grown to $18 trillion. To put that number in perspective, the total U.S. economic output last year was $17.7 trillion. That’s roughly $56,000 of...

  • Can You Read?

Father Kenny St. Hilaire, St. Agnes Catholic Church|Updated Mar 5, 2015

“Of course,” you say. But in all fairness, I didn’t ask the whole question. After all, there are only so many words you can fit into the title of an article! What I really meant to ask was, “Do you know how to read Scripture?” If you’re like most people around here, your response is probably still, “Of course!” Have you ever given a second thought to the way you read the Bible? People read it in different ways and for different reasons. Some people read Scripture to get information: “Just the facts, please.” They’re...

  • North-South Battle for Seattle Fliers

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Mar 5, 2015

The fierce competition between Seattle’s Alaska and Atlanta’s Delta airlines is spilling over to the Port of Seattle, and it may reach your wallet in the form of higher airfares. The Port commission, which manages Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, must decide whether to build a new international arrivals terminal at the south end of the airport or expand the north satellite to accommodate additional domestic flights. At this point, there isn’t the money to fund both. The commission puts the international terminal as it...

  • Recognizing Lind’s Mayor for hard work

    Updated Mar 5, 2015

I would like to publicly thank our Mayor, Jamie Schmunk, for the great job she is doing as our mayor! I have lived in Lind nearly ten years now and have been involved with the community almost the whole time. • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District, Senate Majority Leader|Updated Mar 5, 2015

The two Senate committees that address fiscal issues – Transportation, and the one I serve on, Ways and Means – have joined the policy committees in taking a break so the entire Senate may go to work fulltime in the Senate chamber. We’ll have through March 11 to decide which bills move across the Capitol Rotunda to the House of Representatives. This past week, with the policy committees already on pause, the Senate’s days were pretty much divided between action on the “floor” of the Senate and work in the fiscal committees....
