  • Broncos, Bear Creek to meet in regional dual

    Stephen McFadden|Updated Feb 21, 2013

When the Broncos took the court against Northwest Christian on Monday, the meaning of game was really about geography. The two teams had already earned the right to compete this weekend in the single-game regional tournament to determine who will advance to next week’s state basketball tournament in Spokane. The winner of Monday’s game would travel to Sunnyside as the number three seed to regionals. The loser would go to Mountlake Terrace as the number four seed to regionals. Unfortunately for the Broncos, they fell to NWC...

  • Niezwaag, Goble earn state wrestling hardware

    Stephen McFadden|Updated Feb 21, 2013

Once a year the floor of the Tacoma Dome is converted into a human traffic jam where every individual has something in common — wrestling. For the LRS Broncos it is a right of passage that few experience and even fewer experience to the fullest, The WIAA Mat Classic. The Classic is a collection of the state’s best high school wrestlers from every division, all gathered in the dome at the same time with countless wrestling matches occurring simultaneously on Friday and Sat...

    Katelin Davidson|Updated Feb 21, 2013

The cheers and celebratory cries rang through the Colfax gym as the Tigercats claimed the district championship title from the Pomeroy Pirates Friday, but the loudest cheers came from the seven senior varsity athletes who earned their first championship title in their high school basketball career. • U.S. needs better aircraft

    Updated Feb 21, 2013

“Sequestration” is not the term that I consider to be the best to describe what President Obama is trying to do to our nation, but as we are seeing, he plans to do whatever he wants to do! His budget request for 2013 was to retire 300 airplanes, while buying 54 new ones. The deletion is after retiring 700 more airplanes than it purchased. At the founding of the U.S. Air Force in 1947, we had 12,300 planes and we have 5,200 today. The last time the U.S. bought so few aircraft was 1915 for the aviation section of the U.S. Army...

  • Spending the same dollar twice

    Updated Feb 21, 2013

Two men told the same story. One is a local son. He is active in community affairs including being a supporter and contributor to Project 56. The other man is a highly placed public employee close to Project 56. Because of the decision by Project 56 leadership, and the Ritzville school board to allow Ritzville School District citizenry to “contribute” to the project through a district levy vote, both men assured me Project 56 would keep the $130,000 the group had collected safely banked until needed to fund the expensive mai...

  • State sports coverage should be equal

    Updated Feb 21, 2013

First of all, I like the smaller size of the Journal, but don’t get any smaller print. Next, why did you not take pictures and write up about Washtucna Swimming Pool and lifeguards as you did Ritzville and Lind last summer? These lifeguards did excellent job. Next, you gave LRS football team at State so many pictures and stories. Do your subscribers of Journal remember LaCrosse Washtucna Kahlotus won state title in this same district in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and again in 2008? Four State titles in a row and again three y...

  • Cat Tracks

    Sam Harder, Student Correspondent|Updated Feb 21, 2013

The student body of Washtucna Schools has been extremely busy these past few weeks. Despite a sweeping sickness that plagued the area and the excitement of post-season basketball, our students have persevered to continue their achievements in academics. Here is a look back to what our school has done since December. Upon our return from winter break, students and teachers began immediate preparations for the first semester finals. This is undoubtedly one of the more stressful times of the school year as students study extra h...

  • Ever Wonder Why?

    Dale Anderson|Updated Feb 21, 2013

At the beginning of every sports season, there is that euphoric feeling one often gets when those thoughts that this could be that special year creep into the fan’s psyche. “This person is a senior and we all know how well they did last year,” is often how the justification begins. Don’t we also forget how other teams in a particular league may have also improved? I think back to last year when Gonzaga gave eventual Final Four team Ohio State fits until finally coming up a bit...
