  • The Next Step

    Dale Anderson|Updated Apr 7, 2016

Watching the NCAA tournament has been a lot of fun. I wish the Zags would have been able to play on. It is fun to see a team play long past the time that league play is over. It is exciting to see kids make great improvements from one season to another. Unfortunately some folks believe that merely getting a year older and wiser will automatically make any team member better. If only it was that easy then most anyone could be all-league or even all state. But it isn’t that e...

  • Take unauthorized government spending off autopilot

    Updated Apr 7, 2016

President Ronald Reagan once put it simply: “No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. So governments’ programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth.” Sadly, Reagan’s comments on the lack of accountability for taxpayer dollars are no joke. Reagan points out the truth that the natural tendency of government is to grow, so it is up to the people and the people’s representatives in Congress to keep government accountable...

  • Cost of Boeing airplanes at heart of job cuts

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Apr 7, 2016

Boeing’s new cost-reduction plan has deep ramifications for Washington because the bulk of the 4,500 job cuts are likely to land here. CEO Dennis Muilenburg asked investors to view the savings initiative as “playing offense in a competitive marketplace” even though Boeing has a $431 billion backlog of 5,800 aircraft orders. Translated, Muilenburg means the aerospace giant needs to find ways to lower the price tag of its airplanes. Boeing leaders worry because Airbus’ A320 scooped up 63 percent of the orders last year in head...

The Legislature has adjourned for the year. We wrapped up our voting late Tuesday night, on the 20th day of an overtime session that would not have been necessary if my leadership counterparts in the House of Representatives had simply followed the rules about preparing a budget proposal. Now that the 2016 legislative session has ended, the scoring has begun. Groups representing business, labor, environmental and other interests will look at voting records and decide who deserves their praise. Newspaper editorials are...

Henry immigrated with his family to eastern Washington in 1892 at age seven. Learning to read and write English was a priority for a child who at that point only spoke German. He was no different than any of his neighbors who recognized the value of edu...

  • Reasons for voting yes on school bond

You can learn more about these details in the excellent informative flyer that has been sent out and by reading previous articles printed in this paper. Second: for our community. Various groups and many...
