  • It’s March again

    Dale Anderson|Updated Mar 1, 2018

I’ve watched a lot of basketball this winter, not nearly enough for my standards though. In the next few weeks we’ll see the state tournaments play out, college conference tournaments and the NCAA tournaments, women and men on the nearest television screen. Last Saturday, I went to University High School in the Spokane Valley to watch state regional match ups. The first game was top rated Central Valley girls against the Camas Papermakers. This game was a No. 1 versus No. 8 R...

If they did, they had to give their necklace to the boy t...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Mar 1, 2018

The end of the 2018 legislative session is less than two weeks away. The session hasn’t produced a lot of positive things for the people of our state, but being an eternal optimist, I can point to one. Olympia’s new ruling party has less than two weeks left to impose its liberal special-interest agenda on the families and employers of our state, before we adjourn for the year. My favorite visitors for the week were my three grandchildren, for the Senate’s observance of Children’s Day. It snowed more than once at the Capitol t... Full story

  • Forty million reasons to save our dams

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Mar 1, 2018

What would life in the Mid-Columbia be like if dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers were removed? What would then be used to control flooding that devastated communities before the dams were put in place? How would we provide clean, reliable hydropower for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses? How would our region’s farmers and agriculture industry replace lost access to water that is currently stored behind the dams? This worst-case scenario is not as far-fetched as we would hope, unfortunately. For some interests,...

  • South Korea success goes beyond Pyeongchang Olympics

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Mar 1, 2018

It was hard to get excited about the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, but give the South Koreans credit for overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles to pull the games off, and pull them off exceptionally well. The odds were stacked against them. Few people know where Pyeongchang is and the Korean mountains lack the ambiance of Europe’s Alps and North America’s Rockies. The northern coastal range is known for its frigid Siberian winds and subzero temperatures. Both arrived in the first week of competition and disrupted ski...
