    A pair of special meetings is scheduled for Adams County Public Hospital District No. 2 commissioners.   • Woman killed by train

    An adult female was killed Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 10:25 p.m. when she was struck by an Amtrak train as she walked across the tracks about 100 feet east of the Adams Street crossing. According to a Ritzville Police Department press release, the woman was identified as Angela Ann Leon, 38, of Ritzville.   • Scrap metal thefts continue, sheriff asks witnesses to be careful

    The theft of scrap metal continues to plague Adams County as sheriff’s deputies work with victims and witnesses to resolve the growing number of cases. Sheriff Doug Barger said the agency has taken 25 scrap metal related calls for service in the eastern half of the county since Nov. 1. As a result seven arrests have been made on a variety of charges including burglary, theft, possession of marijuana and criminal trespass.     The LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercats traveled to Dayton for the holiday tournament on Dec. 29 returning with split results after winning a hard fought battle against Wahkiakum and losing to Dayton.     Eastern Washington University has released the Dean’s list for the Fall 2011 quarter. To be placed on the Dean’s list, an undergraduate student must earn 12 quality hours (QHRS) and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or better.     The Governor’s proposed Local Effort Assistance (LEA) cuts to the 9th District school districts inside of Adams County are Benge, Lind, Othello, Ritzville and Washtucna. LEA is also know as Levy Equalization and was intended to help equalize educational funding between property-poor and property-rich districts.     Marcie Miller will serve for another year as chairperson of the Ritzville School Board. The board conducted its annual reorganization Monday, Dec. 19.     Washington State’s minimum wage increased by 37 cents on Jan. 1 to make the current minimum wage $9.04 an hour. This increase has made local business owners nervous and uncertain about the changes they might have to make in the near future. Sam Duncan, co-owner of Ritzville Drug Company, refuses to let any of his employees go, mainly because the store is currently being run by a total of five employees.     The amount of rainfall and total precipitation percentages in Adams County are significantly below normal, keeping the Ritzville area barely outside drought level. Adams County is currently listed at the D0 level by the U.S. Drought Monitor, which qualifies the area as “abnormally dry.” The mean amount of yearly precipitation in Ritzville from 2006-2010 was 12.18 inches while the current precipitation amount for 2011 was about 8.6.
