Bring back some excitement

Earlier last week, my wife and I talked about when we were going to the movie.

We decided that we would go Sunday instead of Saturday night. We had a lot on our plate on Saturday and I felt like staying home to watch a few college games was a good idea.

I’m glad we did stay home because there were a few games that were worth watching late into the night.

When Sunday rolled around, I watched a few minutes of the Seattle Mariners game until it got out of hand, and then I watched parts of a couple of NFL games that got a bit exciting.

Then I started watching the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers game. I’m not sure what it was, but offensively, it didn’t look a lot like the team that went to two Super Bowls. It was sad and boring unless you are into punting and field goal kicking.

When it came time to going to the movie my wife said, “You can stay here and watch your game. I can go to the movie don’t worry about it.”

I said, “That’s okay, I’ll take you to the movie. I don’t have to watch the Seahawks play.”

And so we went to the movie. As a sports fan I’m glad I went to the movie because it turns out the movie had a whole lot more excitement in it than the football game did.

Every sports report I heard concerning the game said things like, “A real ugly game,” “The Seahawks finally scored a touchdown,” (emphasis on finally) “Dropped passes and missed opportunities,” and “Good defense and a ho hum offense”

The movie on the other hand kept you riveted throughout most of it. It was a real thriller that kept us wondering if good was going to prevail over evil, which in the end did happen.

I know a lot of people are hoping for a big season from the Seahawks but it may not happen this year. The line still seems to be trying to find itself.

The Hawks lost some veteran guys because of the salary cap. Whenever big skill position people sign large contracts some of the people that play in the line get shafted, traded or they leave on their own through free agency to find the best paycheck available.

Most fans don’t want to talk about that because their “guy” signed a huge contract for a lot of money and for a good number of years. When that happens teams draft youth to build their lines or make trades to get some experience.

Nobody wants to talk about the inexperienced line that isn’t protecting the QB enough. It is kind of ironic that the QB was playing great with a solid line but when that line isn’t so talented and experienced the QB is running for his life or gets injured. And a lot of the reason is because the QB is getting paid a whole lot of money. It is a vicious circle.

I guess you could say that money is the root of all evil and the downfall of NFL lines. Or maybe it is the salary cap. Either way it makes it tough to keep good lineman.

I know that if this trend of performing poorly on the offensive side of the ball continues, I will look at taking in a movie on Sunday afternoon instead of wasting my time hoping for a better outcome at CenturyLink Field.

So bring back the excitement that we are used to and keep us glued to the television set. It would make for must see TV which I wouldn’t mind seeing again.
