  • Mud Wars:

    Dale Brown|Updated May 9, 2023

RITZVILLE - On a hot Wednesday, May 3, afternoon last week, supporters gathered on bleachers near the high school gymnasium to watch the second Mud War tug-of-war competition. As music blared from loudspeakers, teams of high schoolers grabbed a thick rope and yanked in frantic opposition, slipping and sliding – and dunking one another as they battled for victory in a rectangular tank of goo. The competition pitted Lind-Ritzville High School classes against one another, each c...

  • PE teacher reflects on career path

    Dale Brown, The Journal|Updated May 9, 2023

RITZVILLE – After graduating from Western Washington University a few years ago, Joseph Roach completed his student teaching in Cashmere. The 25-year-old didn’t plan to leave. But teacher Karin Blomquist — one of many mentors he credits with encouraging him on his journey — suggested he apply to Lind-Ritzville High School. Her encouragement led Roach to put his hat in the ring. As a result, Lind-Ritzville High School gained a new, energetic physical education/health teacher last fall. From Roach’s birthplace in White San...

  • From the Files

8 Years Ago Adams County News May 11, 1898 Old Settler's Society There is a call for a meeting and an organization of the "old settlers" now living in Adams County. This is as it should be; there should be a pioneer society formed, to consist of all old settlers who settled in this state in the '60s, and possibly in the early '70s, and now reside in this county. In those days, everyone in the territory was acquainted with every other one. We could meet and compare data;...

  • My parting thoughts from session

    Sen. Judy Warnick|Updated May 9, 2023

Beef Day is the second-best day of the legislative session, next to the last day. Probably the best news about the 2023 legislative session is that we adjourned on time, although there are grumblings from even the governor that he may call for a special session to deal with flawed drug-possession law problem known as the Blake decision. More about that later. As a state senator representing large parts of eastern Washington and chair of the Senate Republican Caucus, I’m repres...

  • It's That Time of the Year

    Don C. Brunell|Updated May 9, 2023

Some would argue that spring is the most wonderful time of the year in Washington. Throughout our state fruit trees blossom, vibrant tulip fields bloom, and colorful lentils carpeted the fields on the Palouse. It is when photographers and sightseers have a field day. While spring is eye-catching, it is the late summer and fall when our state reaps the benefits of the harvest. It is when crops yield “green” generating cash in markets around the world. While Washington ran...
