    The annual Distinguished Young Woman of Ritzville program is slated for Friday, March 18, at 7 p.m. The program is being hosted in a new venue this year, at the Ritzville Grade School gym.   • Wheat Land Communities’ Fair Board seeks royalty applicants

    The Wheat Land Communities’ Fair Board is accepting applications for 2016 Fair Royalty. Three positions are open to young ladies, 14-18 years of age who live within the boundaries of the Lind, Ritzville and Washtucna School Districts, and are currently enrolled in school, entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2016.   • Lind, Ritzville School Boards discuss cooperative updates

    The Lind and Ritzville School Boards met on Feb. 22 for the regularly scheduled meeting to discuss and listen to updates from administrators for the districts. The meeting began with a Transportation Cooperative update and proposal for the purchase of two buses. Transportation Coordinator Lynn Sackmann explained the features of the two buses and answered questions from the board members.   • Homicide investigation underway

    Tragedy woke up members of local law enforcement early on March 1 after a report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian occurred on westbound I-90. Upon arriving at the scene, Adams County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) discovered a female subject deceased in the roadway with multiple punctures to her body near milepost 201, nearly 20 miles west of Ritzville.     Among a full agenda during the Feb. 25 Adams County Public Hospital District No. 2 Board of Commissioners meeting, the primary topic of conversation revolved around the current financial situation of East Adams Care Center (EACC) and the future plans for the facility. CEO/CFO Gary Bostrom explained the initial year-end result for EACC shows the facility losing an estimated $600,000 in the months of operation.     Last week, the president announced his plan to close the U.S. Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where terrorist detainees are being held. The president’s plan is to shut down Guantánamo Bay by transferring some of the 91 detainees to other countries and moving the rest to the U.S. mainland. Closing Guantánamo has been a campaign pledge of the president since 2008, and he is attempting to close the facility in his waning months in office.     The nonprofit foundation recently founded in the community is seeking donations from the area. Spay Neuter Your Pet or SNYP has an account set up at Wheatland Bank for residents to make donations to. Mikki Kison, Janet Bowman and Leslie Greenwalt saw a need for a group to assist low-income families with having their pet neutered.
