    Fifty years ago Lydon B. Johnson declared a war on poverty. Even though disadvantaged people have access to better living conditions and very few are actually hungry his program failed. He wanted people to have the opportunity to (earn a living) and not live on doles of which there are more than 80 means-tested welfare programs. During 2012 alone our government spent $916 billion on these programs at an average cost of $9,000 per recipient.   • EWU Dean’s List announced

    The Eastern Washington University Dean’s List for the Fall 2013 quarter has been announced, with 14 local students making the list. An undergraduate student who earns 12 quality hours (QHRS) and receives a grade point average of 3.5 or better is placed on the Dean’s List for the quarter. LaCrosse students on the Dean’s List are Dallas Filan, Anne Fleming, Gladys Martinez and Cherish Summers.     Four musicians performed at the Rolinco Barn in a pair of recitals in December, with over 170 people attending the two events. The musicians performing (from left) are Bruce Bodden, Alicia Mielke, Greg Presley and Louise Butler. Flutist Mielke was joined by Bodden, her former teacher, on flute, while Presley accompanied on the piano and Butler on cello. Proceeds from the event totaled nearly $2,000, which was donated to the Harrington Food Bank....

    Colton William Stemkoski was born on Jan. 9 at Deaconess Hospital to Ryan and Kayla (Arlt) Stemkoski of Medical Lake. Colton weighed eight pounds at birth and measured 20.5 inches long. Paternal grandparents are Jan and Shelli Stemkoski of Chehalis. Maternal grandparents are Brad and Debbie Arlt of Odessa.     Roy Laverne Bell died Jan. 5 at The Dalles Health & Rehabilitation Center in The Dalles, Ore. Roy was born in Riperia, Wash., on Oct. 23, 1927, to Robert Goodwin Bell and Minnie Belle MacGruder. He had three sisters; Edna, Zella and Rita, and five brothers; Urgel, Robert (Merk), Benjamin, Verle (Bud) and Arthur (Ray). He grew up on a farm near Riperia and attended schools in Riperia, Colfax and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1945. He spent two years in the Navy and was married to Vivian Largent in 1947.     Howard P. Braun died Jan. 15 in Spokane at the age of 95. Howard was born to Henry P. and Katherine E. (Schoessler) Braun on March 24, 1918, in Ritzville. He was the last survivor of 11 children. He attended the Willis Country School in Ritzville and then graduated from Ritzville High School in 1935.
