Bicyclist injured in crash near Othello

OTHELLO – A bicyclist was injured Dec. 15 in a collision with a pickup on state Highway 26.

The crash occurred at 5:30 p.m. near Milepost 39, about a mile west of the city.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Wayne S. Allen, 48, of Seattle, was westbound in a 2019 Ford F350 pickup truck, at the time of the crash.

The bicyclist, Marco A Martinez, 29, of Othello, was riding westbound on the shoulder of the highway, but crossed into the westbound lane of travel as the pickup approached, the patrol reported. He was struck by the vehicle.

Martinez was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane; his condition was not reported.

Neither the driver nor his passenger Jon K. Brennan, 51, of Auburn were injured, the patrol reported.

The crash is under investigation.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been a factor in the crash, the patrol reported. Both the driver and passenger in the pickup were wearing seatbelts.

According to a state patrol report, the preliminary cause of the crash is the cyclist’s failure to yield the right-of-way.
