THIEVES BLOW SAFE

AT ICE PLANT

The safe at the Ritzville Ice and Creamery Company was blown by thieves last Friday night about 12:30. The night watchman at the mill reports three shots were fired, but as shots in the night are frequent occurrences in the neighborhood nothing was thought of it at the time. Evidently foiled in the first two attempts the burglars prepared the last charge with such care that the heavy door was torn from the hinges an hurled across the room, a distance of twelve feet, splintering the wall and wrecking some of the office furniture. A little investigation would have saved the robbers much trouble as the safe has not been locked for several months.

Ship Named For Former Ralston Hero of Navy

The 2,200-ton destroyer, the R.J. Keppler, was launched recently at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard at San Francisco. The vessel was named in honor of R.J. Keppler, a naval hero of World War II and a former resident of Ralston. The sponsor was Mrs. Elizabeth L. Anglin, formerly the wife of the naval hero who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for gallantry in action during the battle of the Solomons in the fall of 1942. Keppler, a bo's'uns mate, served on the cruiser San Francisco.

Fire Destorys Miles of Pasture

Fire swept through pastureland near Marcellus the Fourth of July destroying grass on a strip about 2.5 miles long and a half mile wide. The alarm came in about 1:30 p.m. Too few volunteer firemen in town during the holiday weekend hindered fighting efforts, said rural fire chief Fred Schwisow. He said the flames must have started at the Marcellus dump. They were fanned by a strong wind and found good going in cheatgrass, bunch grass and sage brush. The flames also burned well in about a half acre of standing grain.
