STOP CRIME WAVE

The best minds of America have been devoting a great deal of attention to crime and seeking cure for this National disease. This year's Chautauqua brings one of the progressive public men of the country. Honorable J.D. Botkin, who as warden of the Kansas Penitentiary has studied the matter first hand. The present orgy of bank hold-ups, gang murders, defaulting by officers of big concerns, sex crimes, and others have been variously charged to the after effects of the war, the picturing of criminals in movies, lapse in religion, influx of undesirable foreigners, class hatred and many other causes.

Sprague has arranged for an outstanding program for their Community Veterans Day, set for June 11 at the Sprague Lake Resort; and has issued an invitation to Ritzville folks to be present. Those who attend the event will be rewarded by seeing probably the most complete exhibit of U.S. infantry weapons ever shown in this part of the country. The display is being brought to Sprague to help stimulate interest in the present army recruiting program.

Judge Captures Fleeing Prisoner

The attempted escape of a handcuffed prisoner was foiled two blocks from the jail Wednesday by Judge Ron Snowden who tackled and downed him. Judge Snowden, 35 and a former football player, said he was just arriving at the jail building in his delivery van to hold justice court at 10 o'clock. He heard a shot fired and thought a tire had blown. Then he saw Sheriff Clint Rowe running down Washington street after the fleeing prisoner, holding his gun aloft and shouting "halt." Snowden wheeled his vehicle about, and seeing the prisoner duck along Birch avenue, drove to Division street. As he stopped to park there, the prisoner first started to duck in front of the Snowden van, then ran behind it. Snowden took chase. Across Divsion the prisoner ducked between the Sammy Knoll garage and hedge, Snowden closing in. In the Knoll yard Snowden tackled and downed him.

Bob and Esther Wright

chosen parade marshals

Bob and Esther Wright have witnessed a lot of Lind Rodeo parades, but this year they will have to view the event on video tape as they serve the community they so dearly love as marshals for the Lind Rodeo Parade. Both lifelong residents of Lind, the couple said they were "surprised and honored" to be selected to lead the parade. "With the celebration tied around the theme, 'Angles Among Us,' it was only natural to select the Wrights," said Shanon Davis.
