Gets in Deep Water
There was a big crowd at Sprague Lake trying to keep cool Sunday afternoon. A number of the young people were out rolling the log which floats at the bathing beach. Among them was Shontz Schuler, Jr., who is only a beginner at swimming. The log got out too far for him and he started to go back but found the water beyond his depth. Mildred Chargois saw his plight, went to him and tried to support him, but he carried her under. Then Doris Chargois came to help but she was not able to keep him up. Then others saw them struggling in the water and F.B. Shepley and A.V. Shanks helped Schuler out, and the Chargois girls, who deserve a great deal of credit for their timely aid, were also relieved. Schuler's lungs were pretty well filled with water, but the men worked with him and he revived in a short time.

Blacksmith Shop Destroyed in Blaze Saturday
One of Ritzville's pioneer landmarks, the Frank Morris blacksmith shop on Adams Street near the courthouse was destroyed by fire of unknown origin last Saturday night. The fire, believed to have started under the floor, turned the frame building into a raging inferno and the blaze was so hot when firemen arrived that it was impossible to save anything but the walls. "I hated to see it burn but there's no use crying over spilled milk," Morris said. "I've been working for nearly 76 years now, so I think I'll give up the business and take the rest of my life 'easy'."

Swimmers Pass Livesaving
Tests at Pool
Seven persons earned Red Cross lifesaving certification during the August 6 through 14 classes held at the city swimming pool. Junior lifesaving tests were passed by Kent Devine, Leroy Koehler, Carlee Harder, Jeff Lenhart and Kerry Lenhart. Passing the senior lifesaving requirements were Sandy Moeller and Sue Benzel. Dorann Pavlik and Lexie Danekas conducted the course in which grading depended upon classwork, attendance, age and skill in the water.

Bauman on staff at Washtucna
Leadership in both the classroom and other areas is just one of the areas that Robert "Bob" Bauman will stress to his students at the Washtucna schools. Bauman, 37, has joined the staff as ag and math instructor. He also will conduct a junior high woodshop class.
