County Commissioners award overlay projects bid to Granite Co.

Several overlay projects are about to be underway in Adams County, including a couple outside of the City of Ritzville.

Two of the projects will be done on Danekas and Schoessler roads.

Adams County Public Works Director Todd O’Brien explained that the Danekas Road project is from the city limits to Schoessler Road.

The Schoessler Road project will begin from where the Danekas Road project ended and go to Klein Road, which is a 1.37 mile stretch of roadway.

Crews will also work on Taylor Road Urban Overlay Projects No. 1 and 2, outside of Othello.

The first Taylor Road project is from Hampton to Bench Road and the second is from State Route 26 to Cunningham Road.

The Adams County Board of Commissioners awarded the bid for the projects to Granite Construction Company at the July 24 meeting.

Granite Construction Company, is a subsidiary of Granite Construction Incorporated, which is based in Watsonville, California. Granite Co. has locations throughout Washington state, including Moses Lake and Pasco.

The company proposed a bid of over $1.41 million to complete the work. Granite’s proposal was under Central Washington Asphalt’s bid, which was over $1.44 million.

The Engineer’s estimate for the projects was over $1.48 million.

The commissioners reviewed the bids earlier in the morning. County Engineer Scott Yaeger recommended the Commissioners award the bid to Granite.

“They were the low bid, but they are qualified to do the job,” O’Brien added.

The scope of work for all four projects includes rehabilitating the roadways, mobilization and pavement repairs.

Crews will place a layer of crushed surfacing top course, which is mostly basalt, on the road, followed by a layer of hot mixed asphalt.

All four projects also call for replacing the existing guardrails. There will be temporary pavement markers in place while crews install the guardrails.

O’Brien said all four projects were on the county’s Six Year Transportation Improvement Plan, which the commissioners approved in December, and were budgeted for this year.

The projects are expected to begin later this month. After the commissioners sign the contract with Granite, the company will receive a notice to proceed in 10 days.

O’Brien said crews are expected to compete the work in third or fourth week of September, if everything goes according to plan.

O’Brien also expects no delays on the roads as crews will have traffic control measures in place while they are completing the work.
