Leila Bernadine Kayler

Leila Bernadine Kayler, 95, died Feb. 25, at the Odessa Memorial Care Center.

She was born June 7, 1921, the daughter of Otis Paul Gordon and Avis Maryl Gordon, in Great Falls.

Her early childhood years were spent in Okanogan, until moving to Pullman, when she was 12, meeting her first sweetheart, Fred Kayler, who proved to be her life long love.

She graduated from Pullman High School and enjoyed two years at Washington State University in dietetics.

On Fred’s furlough from the army, borrowing some money and a car, they eloped to Reno, on July 21, 1942. Their parents learned of the marriage on the radio.

Because of deteriorating eyesight Leila sought treatment on the east coast and remained in Washington, D.C., employed by the Department of the Navy until Fred’s discharge at the end of World War II.

Starting their life together they moved several times because of work, eventually settling in Ritzville, where they raised three children.

Leila was active in the Ritzville community participating in her church, Girl Scouts, Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls and working with the school lunch program.

Fred and Leila enjoyed many years at their second home at Priest Lake, becoming “snow birds,” to Mesa, Arizona, in retirement.

Leila was and always will be an adored wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred of 61 years and is survived by her children Kristin L. Moeller, Allen E. Kayler, and Leslie A. Spencer; grandchildren Emilee Moeller, Erica (Ryan) Miller, Reina (Michael) Murcar, Ethan Kayler, Branden (Tiffany) Spencer, Karly (Zach) Ramsey; two great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

The family is honoring Leila’s wish with a private family celebration of her life.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Children Hospital, 911 W. Fifth Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.
