Rose Clara (Beck) Scheeler

Rose Clara (Beck) Scheeler died on Dec. 22 in Ritzville at the age of 100.

She was born June 13, 1916 in Warden to Karl and Magdalena Beck. She was a long time resident of Lind, graduating from Lind High School in 1935.

After high school jobs were hard to come by so Rose and her sister Justine cooked school lunches and worked at the telephone office as a switchboard operator.

During WWII she worked at Kasper’s grocery store at which time all items purchased were hand written on a receipt slip. She also worked at Angelo’s restaurant, Hains Variety and Emerson Drug.

On August 2, 1947 she married the love of her life John Scheeler. Rose and John moved to the Scheeler farm, where John and his brother Jack farmed as Scheeler Brothers. In 1982 John and Rose moved into the town of Lind and in 1986 retired from the farm.

Rose was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church of Lind, where she served as church council secretary and was active in the Women’s Circle. She had been a 50 year member of the Business Girls Club (Tredecim Club) and a 50 year member of the Rebekah Lodge. Rose also worked with the Red Cross, voting polls and was very active in the Lind Centennial in 1988.

Rose had many hobbies that kept her busy through the years; collecting antique beaded purses, digging for antique bottles, and cake decorating to name just a few.

Rose may have been little but she was mighty. There were few things she couldn’t do. She helped many people in the town of Lind throughout the years, making meals for those who became ill, or cookies and sweets to lift the spirits of those who needed well wishes, saying “That’s what life is about.”

Rose is preceeded in death by her parents; husband John, brothers: Edwin (Hulda), Fred (Sylva), Benjamin (Gertrude) and Johann. Sisters Johanna Beck, Bertha (Reinhold) Wahl, Amelia (David) Sauer, Pauline (Julius) Roloff, Helen (Edmund) Gutschmidt, and Justine (John) Winkler.

She is survived by daughter Loretta (Bob) Hudson of Mariposa California, granddaughter Kim (Jim) Vineyard of Atwater California, and two great- grand children, Amber (Clark) Evans Elkins, West Virginia and Daniella Vineyard, Merced California, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Rose’s life will be held at a later date.
