Hilary, Donald and God

President Hillary Clinton . . . or will it be President Donald Trump? After a long presidential campaign, in just a few days we will find out who our country will elect as its 45th president.

The choice between the two candidates is as stark as any presidential election in our nation’s history, as the candidates’ visions for the future could not be more different.

Both sides of the political divide have grave concerns about what will happen if the other side takes control of the White House. But at this pivotal point in history, we can find reassurance by taking a heavenly perspective on these earthly events.

The Bible is very clear that God is sovereign over the events on earth. There may be some debate about how far God extends his control in the affairs of humankind, but one thing all Christians can agree on is that God’s will and plans cannot be thwarted.

No matter who holds the political positions of power in human governments, the Bible declares that “those in positions of authority have been placed there by God,” and that “he sets up kings and deposes them.” Biblical examples include the Egyptian pharaoh from whom the enslaved Jewish nation was miraculously delivered.

God said of him: “I raised you up for the very purpose of displaying my power in you and that my name may by proclaimed throughout the earth.”

Another example is the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, who told Jesus after he was arrested that he had the power to determine his fate. Jesus responded by saying, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.”

At the end of the Bible the apostle John is given a series of visions. He sees God sitting on his heavenly throne with Jesus as a slain lamb standing in the center. In reference to the appointed time in the future when Jesus will return to establish his eternal kingdom on earth and bring peace, John hears loud voices in heaven proclaim: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.”

Although I am as concerned as any other fellow American about the future of our country, I find solace in the fact that whether Hillary or Donald holds the White House, it’s God who holds the future. Among the many names ascribed to Jesus in the Bible, one of them is King of kings and Lord of lords. We could also add that he is the “President of presidents”!
