Lady Broncos split doubleheader

The Lady Broncos were able to push ahead to win their first game of the day on April 9 when they faced the Colfax Lady Bulldogs at noon on their home field.

The two teams were evenly matched and showed this through the back and forth scoring that took place during the doubleheader.

Colfax took an early 2-0 lead in the first but by the top of the sixth the score was tied 7-7. Both teams brought in one runner in the sixth inning and Colfax brought in two in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Broncos then pinch-hit Cassandra Rand who was able to hit a single to drive in the first run followed by Emily Rosen who hit a double to bring in the tying and winning runners. The game ended 11-10 in favor of the Lady Broncos.

Emma Aldrich was on the mound with Lacey Miller behind the plate as they held Colfax to just nine hits compared to the Lady Broncos 12 hits.

Emily Kinney was 3-for-4, Alisha Baker was 3-for-3 and Rosen went 3-for-5 in this first game. Head Coach Todd O’Brien saw his team scoring consistently and making plays while there were runners in scoring position.

In the first inning of the second game the Lady Bulldogs were able to bring in five runners but heading into the top of the seventh inning the score was tied 6-6. Colfax brought in two runners and the Lady Broncos were unable to turn hits into runs. The game ended with the Lady Broncos losing 6-8.

Baker was 3-for-4 and Tessa O’Brien made it on base each time she was at the plate with three walks and one hit.

Coach O’Brien was proud of the way the team played and was impressed that Colfax’s early lead did not stop the Lady Broncos from giving it their all.

He did see base running errors, which he plans to work on with his team to improve their play for future competitors.

The Lady Broncos are currently 3-5 and rank in the sixth or seventh position in the league. They have faced some of the toughest competitors and are going to use the experience to inch their way up in the standings during the rest of the season.

The Lady Broncos faced Davenport in Davenport on Tuesday, April 12, and will stay on the road for a doubleheader versus Tekoa-Rosalia in Tekoa on Saturday, April 16.

The final home game of the season will take place on Tuesday, April 19 at 2 p.m. when they take on the Reardan Lady Indians.
