Barbara Faye (O’Donnell) Simonsen

Barbara Faye (O’Donnell) Simonsen was born to John and Lucy O’Donnell on February 19, 1923. She joined siblings, Arlene, John and Burton in their home in Chelan. Barbara spent the majority of her childhood and teen years in Chelan.

During her 18th year, in 1941, Barbara was crowned Chelan Rodeo Queen. She also met the man who would become her husband and life partner.

Harold Simonsen and Barbara O’Donnell were married on September 28, 1941.

Their life adventure together ended just two weeks shy of 70 years when Harold passed away in September of 2011.

Harold and Barbara raised four children: Jim (Judy) of East Wenatchee; Janet (Don), Ritzville; Janel, Ritzville; and Rich (Nikki) Spokane.

Throughout her adult life Barb was very involved in both church and community. In Chelan she worked for the Chamber of Commerce, belonged to service organizations, taught Sunday school, was involved in Church activities, and was both a Blue Bird and Campfire Girls’ leader.

Later when the family moved to Lind, Barb was again involved in Church and Community. She helped organize and run the Friendship Center for Seniors. She also was a Cub Scout Den leader.

When Harold retired and they moved to Spokane, Barb was again involved in Church outreach, but now she had time to golf and bowl, which she and Harold enjoyed doing together and with friends.

During their later years, Harold and Barbara moved back to Ritzville. She was still active with Grandmothers’ Club and the Senior Center.

Barbara moved to Life Care Center in Ritzville in 2011. Her gentle spirit and kindness drew residents and staff to her. On January 28, Barb joined family and friends on yet another adventure.

Barbara is survived by her four children, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at Zion Philadelphia UCC on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.

Danekas Funeral Home and Crematory-Ritzville is entrusted with arrangements.
