Broncos gear up for Reardan

The Broncos remain undefeated after a tough victory against the Liberty Lancers. During their homecoming game on Friday the Broncos had a difficult time moving the ball on defense but were able to secure a win against the Lancers because of their defense.

The Bronco offense had a hard time moving the ball down the field, completing only eight out of 19 passes and averaging 2.9-yards per play they struggled to put points on the board.

Coach Greg Whitmore commented about the team’s performance.

“We shut them out, which I didn’t necessarily think we’d do they’re pretty dynamic offensively.”

The Broncos would score early with Jacob Saetre intercepting a Lancer pass and returning it for the first touchdown early in the first quarter.

The game would then seesaw between the teams with neither able to gain a large advantage or sustain an offensive drive until the fourth quarter.

Saetre would connect with Hugh Hennings in the fourth for 23-yards and the second touchdown of the game.

“That was pretty uncharacteristic of the way we’ve been playing. I thought we played pretty slow, I thought we looked pretty tired at times, I thought we played tentative, I thought we made a lot of little mistakes not running crisp routes not holding blocks…. [We] just couldn’t sustain drives,” Whitmore said.

Coach Whitmore was happy his team was able to shut out the Lancers despite their struggles on offense. He said Friday’s game was the lowest amount of yards the Broncos had moved the ball in 47 games. The Bronco total yards came to 147 with Liberty’s offense winning 197-yards, 164 of those from passing. Whitmore said the Bronco defensive backs played well. They prevented many big plays for Liberty and made four interceptions. The Bronco defense allowed only 3.9 yards per play and only 33-yards rushing. The majority of the yards gained against the Broncos were from a few long passes Liberty was able to connect with.

“To Liberty’s credit they came out and they knew they needed to play a great game and hope we weren’t at out best and they did it, they played a great game and we weren’t at our best and they almost pulled the upset,” Whitmore said.

With Homecoming and a tough game behind them the Broncos will begin their preparation to face the Reardan Indians in a game, which, Whitmore says, has league championship implications. Both teams are currently undefeated.

“They’re gonna be gunning for us and they’re gonna have all the motivation in the world so we can’t afford to play anything but the best and make those big plays when we have opportunities,” Whitmore said.

To prepare the team they will be working on speed and execution to prepare to face the Indians. He also said the team would need to have more physical practices leading up to the game because the team was not prepared for the type of game Liberty played on Friday.

“We’ve got to be able to run the ball better than we did against Liberty, They pursue hard so we have to do some misdirection stuff. Offensively we’re going to have to complete some passes,” Whitmore said.
