Countywide clean-up day slated April 5

The annual Adams County free residential yard waste clean up day is scheduled for Saturday, April 5. The county transfer stations are accepting non-commercial green waste and loads of yard debris from residents from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 6.

Appliances and electronics are also accepted free of charge at the transfer stations during the event. Household hazardous waste is collected at no cost every day the transfer station facilities are open for public use.

Residents are asked to separate green woody material from the non-clean woody materials to reduce waiting time at the transfer stations.

Electronic recycling is now available free of charge for county residents at the Adams County Development Center store, “Experienced Merchandise” located at 119 East Main in Othello. Recycling items are limited to computers, monitors and televisions. Accessories such as keyboards, mice, printers, copiers, scanners and other electronic devices are not accepted.

Anyone dropping off a computer for recycling is responsible for the removal of data. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, from noon to 4:30 p.m.

The City of Ritzville has designated the week of April 1-6 as the appliances and junk vehicles clean up week. Contact Ritzville City Hall at 659-1930 for more information.

Residents requiring assistance in transporting appliances are asked to contact the local town hall to inquire about possible assistance or programs. Lind residents can contact town hall for more specific information at 677-3241 and Washtucna residents are asked to call 646-3253.

Washington state law requires loads are secured and residents are advised a $10 fee is charged for unsecured loads. Loads must be secured so that the material cannot slide, shift or fall onto the roadway.

The charges for the Adams County transfer stations outside of this event for solid waste are $70 per scaled ton, $.0350 per scaled pound, $8 minimum charge and $10 for any unsecured load. The fees for recycling are $45 for residents per ton of yard waste or cardboard but the first 250 pounds are free, and commercial yard waste or cardboard per ton is $45 with a minimum charge of $5.

Both aluminum cans and clean scrap metals four feet lengths or less are no charge at the transfer stations. For special waste, white goods/appliances are $8 per item.

Used oil, vehicle batteries and household hazardous waste are all collected free of charge, but used oil and household hazardous wastes are accepted from residents only. Standard size tires only are also accepted with a fee of $1.50 per item, and tires other than the standard size are $180 per ton.

The Bruce Transfer Station is located at 504 South Lucy Road in Othello. The Ritzville Transfer Station is located at 1803 East Danekas Road in Ritzville.

The Bruce Transfer Station returns to regular summer hours on Tuesday, April 1. The station is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
