Bulldog News: Middle school students succeed in competition

This month has been busy with many things going on at the Middle School. Bi-County, Honor Band, the Zillah Robot Challenge, Band Contest, the ASB World’s Finest Chocolate sale, and March Madness.

The annual Bi-County Academics Competition was held on March 13 in Wilbur. Many ribbons were won by third through eighth grade participants from Lind-Ritzville. Students competed in Spelling, Math, Geography, Impromptu Speech, Persuasive Speech, and Interpretative Speech competitions.

Bi-County Honor Band was held on March 17 in the Spokane Opera House. A few seventh and eighth grade band students had the opportunity to play with some of the best band students from all over the Bi-County. Director Billy Ray, who comes from St. John, conducted the band. The band played four pieces, “The Gold Rush of 1849,” “Dreams of Scotland,” “The Hobbit,” and “The Road to Chancellorsville.” Many students said they enjoyed honor band and would like to be chosen to attend it again next year.

The Zillah Robot Challenge occurred on March 19. Lance Marquardt took two groups this time.

The eighth grade team was Jack Anderson and McKayla Hall, and the seventh grade team was Morgan Brausen and Devin Schafer.

They drove up to Zillah early that morning to attend the competition. The rules were slightly changed this time. This time each robot had to be guided through each course by a flashlight. The groups worked hard on their robots and as a result Jack and McKayla got sixth place, and Morgan and Devin got 11th place out of over 40 groups! Good job Robotics teams!

Band Contest was March 20 in Asotin. The sixth, and seventh and eighth grade bands performed in front of two judges, and both groups received ones, which is a superior rating.

That is the highest score you can receive. Afterwards, they went to Pizza Hut to celebrate!

This month was also the World’s Finest Chocolate fundraiser for the Middle School. They sold the chocolates for $6 per box. The money went toward the end-of-the-year trip to Patterson’s. There are also prizes for selling the most chocolate. You get a five-pound chocolate bar if you are the top seller in the school, and you get a one-pound chocolate bar if you are one of the two top sellers in your class. The students raised a lot of money. For example, Chris Dean, sold $216 worth of chocolate and Tamera Wolf sold over $1,000.

Thank you for supporting our school and our students. One of the things we have purchased this year are new chairs for the gym for the teams and coaches to sit on. They look fantastic.

The Middle School March Madness is on March 26 this year. There will be multiple challenges testing the basketball skills of the students and teachers. Mr. Scott Nygren organizes this for us every year and does a great job. We have a lot of fun so thanks Nygren. There will be prizes for the winners and a raffle. Mr. Rob Roettger and Mr. Nick Weishaar are going to compete in a three-point contest. Good luck to all participants!
