AAUW recognizes three young scholars

Three young women have been named by their respective high schools as scholars to be honored by the local Ritzville Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW). The three young women, their parents, and a teacher chosen by each to share in the honor, will be guests for a dinner meeting April 9 at the Zion Philadelphia United Church of Christ social room. Each scholar will receive a certificate awarded by the Washington State AAUW.

Each student is of the junior class and was selected by the faculty to receive recognition for outstanding achievement in the STEM disciplines of science, technology or mathematics. In recognizing these young women, each is encouraged to continue her education and careers in these fields.

Named by Lind-Ritzville High School are Sara Aldrich and Kara Eckley. Sprague High School honors Tracy Melville.

Aldrich is honored for achievement in mathematics and science. She is the daughter of Jason and Jennifer Aldrich. Sara plans to attend a four-year university and is considering studying engineering.

Eckley, the daughter of Dr. Valerie Eckley, is recognized for achievement in technology. After graduation she will attend a small college, such as Seattle Pacific University. Kara would like to pursue a career in medicine.

Melville is honored for achievement in mathematics and science. Tracy is the daughter of Elizabeth Melville. She plans to attend college and is interested in further study of English or biology.
