Lady Broncos chasing league’s top two

In third place with a Northeast 2B League record of 7-3 and an overall record of 11-5, the LRS Lady Broncos had a productive and challenging week recently.

They defeated Davenport and then Reardan, before losing in the final seconds of their Saturday night home game to the St. George’s Lady Dragons.

With the trio of league games in the books, the Lady Broncos find themselves sitting in third place, behind undefeated Northwest Christian and Colfax.

With four league games remaining in the regular season, the team will have one more shot at both of those teams in the final week. This coming weekend, they will host Liberty and Davenport. Tuesday, Jan. 28, on senior night NWC comes to town. On Friday, Jan. 31, LRS closes the regular season at Colfax.

Saturday the Lady Broncos were stunned in the final seconds by the Lady Dragons. In the opening quarters LRS held the edge. They led 11-5 after the first period. By the half, the score was 20-15.

St. George’s started to edge back in the third quarter with a two-point advantage in the period, 13-11. LRS still held the lead, 31-28.

With the game tied and 26 seconds remaining, St. George’s took the win when Allison Hayes got a steal and converted that into a two-point lay-in. The Lady Broncos had one more chance, but couldn’t get the ball to the net.

For the night, Jenna Bennett and Tessa Jantz led the team scoring with 11 each. Bennett finished with six rebounds, an assist and one steal. Jantz had three rebounds and a steal.

Dalyn Killian added eight points, 10 rebounds and one assist. Mallory Kessler finished with five points, 11 rebounds and a blocked shot. Tommi Swannack had five points, seven rebounds and two assists. Randi York had one point and one steal.

Friday at Reardan the Lady Broncos grabbed a 44-34 league win.

Jantz paced the team with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Swanack scored nine, pulled down four rebounds and logged one assist, one blocked shot and two steals. Killian finished with seven points, six rebounds, one assist and a steal. Kessler had five points, six rebounds, two steals and a block. Sydney Nelson scored three, grabbed four rebounds and three steals. Bennett finished with six points, five rebounds and two steals. Felicia Ziemer had four points, two rebounds and one steal.

The Tuesday, Jan. 14, meeting at Davenport was the easiest win of the week as the Lady Broncos picked up a 51-39 final.

Eight players scored with Bennett leading the way with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Killian had eight points, five rebounds and an assist, while Jantz scored eight, grabbed seven rebounds, an assist, one block and a steal.

Swannack contributed seven points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Kessler scored six, grabbed three rebounds and stole the ball three times. Ziemer added four points and a rebound. York had two points, two rebounds and a steal. Nelson scored two, snared seven rebounds and two assists.
