Mat men doing well in early battles

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the LRS Broncos wrestling team traveled to Reardan for a league match. Three wrestlers competed there.

Karl Hawks wrestled at 195 pounds. He wrestled Kameron Danforth of Davenport and lost by pin.

Next up was Matt Vercoe at 220. He wrestled Devin Randel of Wilbur-

Creston/Keller. Vercoe won by pin in the first period. He then went against Erick Sackett of Davenport and ended up losing by pin.

Layne Hawks at 285, wrestled Randy Bohnet of WCK and won by pin. He then wrestled Heiko Birkel of Reardan and also won by pin.

The team traveled to Spokane to the Winter Warrior Classic on Friday, Dec. 20-21. Four wrestlers attended.

Hoang Vu wrestled at 145, Karl Hawks at 182, Matt Vercoe at 220 and Layne Hawks at 285.

Vu wrestled a North Central opponent and lost by pin. He then wrestled another North Central athlete and wrestled well, but ended up losing by pin.

Karl wrestled a Colville athlete first and lost by pin. His next match was against Chewelah and Karl ended up losing by pin.

Vercoe went against a Gonzaga Prep wrestler and won by pin. This put him in the semifinals against Selkirk where he lost by pin. Vercoe then wrestled a Mead wrestler and fought hard, but ended up losing by pin to finish in sixth place.

Layne wrestled a Colville athlete and won by pin. He then went against another Chewelah wrestler and won by pin. Layne’s final match was against a wrestler from Mead. He eventually lost the back and forth battle.

The team traveled to Pomeroy on Dec. 27-28 for a tournament.

Karl wrestled twice on Friday. He went against Steven Sismore of Clarkston and won by pin. He then wrestled Dennis Laika of Waitsburg-Prescott and also won by pin.

Vercoe also wrestled twice on Friday. He went against Christian Dietrich of Clarkston, winning by pin. He then wrestled Tyler Hoffman of WP and also won by pin.

Layne went against Nick McAdams of Colfax, winning by pin. He then wrestled Daniel Koulepp of Joseph Oregan and lost by pin.

On Saturday Karl wrestled Andrew Carney of Kittitas and lost by pin. He then went against Bryan DeYoung of Colfax and also lost by pin.

His last match was against Carney again and ended up losing by pin to finish sixth.

Vercoe wrestled Dietrich of Clarkston and won by pin. He then met Wyatt Warnock of Joseph, Ore. and lost by pin. Vercoe then wrestled Tyler Hoffman of WP and won by pin.

In his final match against Evan Lord of Colfax and he lost by pin to finish fourth.

Layne wrestled JJ Nahpi of Kittitas and won by pin. He then went against Daniel Kohlepp of Joseph, Ore., and lost by pin. Layne then wrestled Nick McAdams of Colfax and Layne got caught out of position and was pinned to finish in fourth place.
