A new contest has been created for the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair this year to attract participants young and old.

A marshmallow catapult contest has been created to wrap up the weekend events.

Contestants are required to build a swing arm catapult capable of launching a standard-sized marshmallow.

Four age categories have been designated to the contest beginning with eight and under; nine to 13-years-old; 14-19 years old; and 20 and older.

The marshmallow contest rules are:

• Contestants may use more than one type of material;

• The footprint is no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches;

• Contestants cannot use motors to power the unit;

• Contestants under the age of eight may use a kit;

• Catapults must be exhibited in the fair in open youth, 4-H, FFA or adult divisions;

• Entries cannot be previously entered in the fair;

• Entries can not be a Trebuchet.

Catapults will be released to each participant prior to the contest.

The marshmallow catapult contest is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, near the Lion’s Club amphitheatre.

The contest is sponsored by the McGregor Company of Lind, Ritzville and Washtucna.
