Melville captures seventh in state tennis play

As one of the three LRS tennis athletes traveling to the state competition, Tracy Melville brought home a seventh place medal in the 2B girls’ singles competition. Tracy Melville, Kelly Melville and Alanna Wheeler all traveled to the 2B State Tennis Tournament in Yakima on Thursday and Friday.

Tracy began the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Cashmere’s Molly Kenoyer in the first round of the competition. The early tournament win moved Tracy into competition with Michele Lui from Forest Ridge.

Lui proved to be the athlete to beat in the girls’ singles competition, and defeated Tracy 6-0, 6-0 in the second round of the tournament on May 24. Lui went on to become the tournament champion with a flawless record at the state competition.

The loss dropped Tracy into the loser’s bracket, leaving her with an opportunity to place in the fourth or the seventh spot. Tracy played a pro-set match against Margaret Busey of La Salle, earning an 8-3 win and allowing her to continue in the competition.

Tracy faced Megan Robinson in the medal match and earned seventh place after falling to Chelan’s Robinson 6-0, 6-2.

In the doubles’ competition, Kelly and Wheeler faced South Whidbey’s Tess Radisch and Amelia Weeks in the first round of the tournament. The LRS duo earned an early tournament victory after defeating the South Whidbey team 6-4, 7-5.

The win moved Kelly and Wheeler into a match against the Cascade team of Hailey Hassinger and Katie Whitten. The LRS duo fell to Cascade 6-1, 6-1 and fell into the other side of bracket play.

The loss moved Kelly and Wheeler into a pro-set duel against Zillah’s Caitlin Meyers and Kiersten Ritchie.

The Bronco ladies were defeated 8-5 and were knocked out of the tournament play.
