LRS girls tennis team remains undefeated

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team traveled to Davenport on April 17 for a league match. The LRS girls’ team swept the match with a 5-0 record over the Gorillas, and the Bronco boys returned home with a 4-1 record.

Tracy Melville continued to have a successful season by winning the number one singles match 6-0, 6-0 against Michaela Holden.

Melville has only suffered one loss this season to St. George’s Darby Pierce.

Lindy Brown faced Oiana Casch in the number two singles competition and also earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Davenport. Carissa Peavey continued the girls’ teams winning streak by defeating Aslyn Morris 6-1, 6-1 in the number three singles match.

The Broncos’ number one doubles team of Alanna Wheeler and Kelly Melville continued their undefeated season when they beat Sara Guhlke and Marissa Brown 6-0, 6-0. The number two doubles team of Rachel Barrus and Kymberlee Webb won their match by default.

On the boys’ side, Zach Swanger won the number one singles match over Max Mielke 6-4, 6-2. Justin Templin suffered a 6-1, 6-1, loss to Davenport’s Jared Reagan in the number two singles match, while Stephen Ulrich won the number three match 6-2, 6-4 against Evan Powers.

The Broncos doubles teams swept the competition with the toughest competition occurring in the number one doubles match. Broncos Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday battled against Kyle Edwards and Derek Edwards, eventually winning the match with a 7-5, 7-5 score.

Zeth Swanger and Travis Ste. Marie earned a win in the number two doubles match with a 6-2, 6-0 score over Davenport’s Drake Elwood and Rich Neumeger.

The league matches continued for the Broncos on Saturday, April 20, when the Broncos met the LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercats in their first league match-up of the season. The two teams played each other in a season opening tournament, where the Broncos claimed early success over the LW team.

The LRS team swept the competition, ending the Saturday match with a 5-0 record for both the boys and girls teams. The number two singles girls’ match and number one boys’ singles match proved to be the toughest competitions of the day.

Tracy Melville started the Broncos’ success of the day after defeating Lura Potter 6-1, 6-3 in the number one singles match. The early win was joined when the boys’ number one doubles team of Wheeler and Canaday took the win from Levi Allen and Douglas McKeen 6-1, 6-0.

Brown and Brooklynn Hostetler battled in the number two singles competition, which ended in a tie after three sets. The tiebreaker set ended in favor of Brown, who eventually took the 7-5, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 win from Hostetler in a match lasting nearly two and a half hours.

In the number one singles match, Zach Swanger and Justin Wargo matched up in a league rivalry game.

Swanger earned the early lead with a 6-3 score in the first set, but Wargo battled back to win the second set 6-4. The third set eventually fell in favor of Swanger, 6-0.

The final match of the day between the girls’ number one doubles team ended strongly in favor of the Broncos when Wheeler and Melville defeated Chelsie Kneale and Amber McCaleb 6-1, 6-2.
