Lady Broncos net non-league wins

Two non-league outings last weekend were positive exercises for the Lady Broncos, as they scored wins over Odessa-Harrington and Warden. The rebound wins follow a tough Tuesday night loss at Colfax.

Against Colfax, the Lady Broncos suffered a 57-36 loss after a solid opening quarter.

“We started well, after the first quarter we were down two,” head coach John Galbreath said. “It has been a theme lately that we play pretty good for three quarters with one bad one. Our second quarter was it. We go in at halftime with a 16-point deficit and lose by 21.”

Jenna Bennett led the team with 11 points and six rebounds. Dalyn Killian contributed nine points and four steals, and Randi York scored 10 points coming in off the bench. Mariah Kiel and Maya Wahl both scored two. Brooke Pichette and Haley Oestreich scored one each.

The Odessa-Harrington outing ended with the Lady Broncos taking a 47-41 win in Odessa.

“We came out pretty good and played pretty well other than the fourth quarter,” Galbreath said. “In the first half they scored 18 points and at the end of the third quarter they only had 21. We had three great quarters and then we gave up 20 points in the fourth quarter. We have to be able to pull all four quarters together. Once we do, we will have some great wins and some good basketball.”

Killian led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bennett tallied nine points and five steals. Mallory Kessler and Pichette each scored seven points and hauled in six rebounds. Sydney Nelson and Oestreich each scored four.

Galbreath said one team goal is to score 60 points per game. The Lady Broncos came close at home on Saturday when they defeated Warden, 55-42.

“The girls have not given up or stopped progressing,” Galbreath said. “I’m excited for the break, some of the girls are gassed and pretty tired.”

While the score was clearly in favor of LRS, Galbreath said it was a tough outing.

“Jenna sprained her ankle early,” he said. “We had three girls with three fouls before the half. Rest couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Killian again topped the scoring chart with 14 points and six rebounds. York sank 12 points and four rebounds while Pichette kicked in 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kessler scored six while Nelson and Oestreich each had four. Kristine Lamping scored three and Wahl had two.
