Stamper, Harder, Fleming on to state

During the District 9 2B Championships on Friday, May 18 at Clarkston High School, the SJELW team earned top places in many events. The LaCrosse-Washtucna team is sending three athletes on to the state tournament on Friday, May 25 at Eastern Washington University.

The athletes that have qualified are Darcy Stamper, Gail Harder and Anne Fleming. Stamper is competing in one event, the high jump.

Last year, Stamper traveled to the state competition where he received a medal for his fifth place finish. Stamper first reached his personal record of six feet and two inches during last year’s district track meet.

Stamper has remained consistent in the high jump this season by matching his personal record in every meet except at three events. Stamper is currently slated in fourth place in the state, tied with Chandler Chapman from Naselle.

Stamper, who is only a sophomore, is likely to place in the finals in the high jump since the majority of the competitors at the state tournament have only jumped six feet, which is two inches under Stamper’s record.

Harder is a freshman and is competing in the 4x100-meter relay alongside Fleming and St. John-Endicott teammates, Rachel Gfeller and Gretchen VanLith. The team is slated in 14th place, just one place behind the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague relay team. The SJELW team set a personal record during the preliminaries at the district meet.

Fleming is a senior and participating in her final sporting event for her high school career. Fleming is competing in all three of the SJELW relay teams: 4x100, 4x200 and the 4x400-meter.

During the 2012 track season, the relay teams have been Fleming’s primary focus, as she rarely competed in any individual events. Fleming hopes to complete her high school athletic career on a high note and the girls have to earn a personal best in order to place in the state tournament.
