Holiday favorites include time spent with loved ones, consuming copious amounts of sugar and singing traditional holiday tunes. The spirit of the holidays will come alive in downtown Ritzville on Saturday, December 15, as the Winter Fest activities continue. This year’s inaugural Winter Fest celebration began with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony and will culminate with hayrides and caroling in Ritzville. The entirety of the Winter Fest events also includes Jingle Bell Shop, which encourages residents and visitors to s...

  • Worst Seat In The House: The way it should be

    Dale Anderson, Sports Columnist|Updated Feb 1, 2019

One of the things that I wish is to have been able to play in the high school football playoffs but those wouldn’t happen until four years after I graduated. I enjoy watching playoff games with match ups between teams that typically never play against each other. It would have been fun to play against some very good teams as there were at least five really good teams that played across the state in the fall of 1969. But we could only think about what might have been after the...

  • Broncos basketball improves to 3-1 on season

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated Feb 1, 2019

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos basketball team picked up two more wins in non-conference play last week, improving its record to 3-1. The Broncos narrowly beat the Oakesdale Nighthawks at home on Dec. 4, winning 46-44 in a game that was close all night long. LRS took an 18-17 lead into halftime and a 35-30 lead into the third quarter, and were able to prevent a Nighthawks comeback thanks to a game-winning layup from sophomore Drew Kelly with two seconds remaining. Drew then iced the game with a steal on the following...

  • Lady Broncos split pair of non-league games

    Brandon Cline, Managing Editor|Updated Feb 1, 2019

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos ended last week on a high note with a 60-34 thrashing against the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats to improve their record on the season to 2-2. The week started on a tougher note for the Lady Broncos, as they fell at home 61-49 to a potent Oakesdale Nighthawks team on Dec. 4. LRS went into halftime trailing by 10 to the Nighthawks, and played a much tighter and more contested second half to keep the game relatively close throughout. Sophomore Linnea Schafer led the Lady Broncos in scoring with...

  • Good economic news sprinkled with caution

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Feb 1, 2019

The good news is Washington’s revenues continue to grow and projections for the next couple of years appear promising. That is welcome news, but it is sprinkled with caution about introducing new taxes. Our state’s Economic and Revenue Forecast Council (ERFC) quarterly update shows a whopping 17.3% increase in state income for the current biennium. That welcome announcement comes just in time for Christmas. For background, Washington’s budget is on a two-year cycle. The curre...

  • Commissioner Walker provides EARH update

Commissioner Eric Walker, Adams County Hospital District No. 2|Updated Feb 1, 2019

As the year draws to a close, here are some odds and ends of updates on District business. In late November, the District held a Strategic-Planning session. Normally, such sessions try to lay out goals, and strategies to meet those goals, for a multi-year period, but this time the focus was more short-term—a year or two—because we will be welcoming a new CEO in mid- 2019, as Gary retires then. The planning was thus left flexible enough so that whoever the next CEO is will be able to put his or her impress on the lon...

  • Legislative Commentary: Dec. 13, 2018

State Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Feb 1, 2019

Dear Friends, Here on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, when we remember those who lost their lives in Hawaii on this day 77 years ago, there is another reason to think of George H.W. Bush, our nation’s 41st chief executive. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II and what specifically was known as the War in the Pacific – where the first President Bush began his decades of distinguished public service, as a U.S. Navy torpedo bomber pilot. I very well remember his time as the leader of our...

    Updated Feb 1, 2019

Dear Ritzville Community, First of all, we want to dispel rumors pertaining to the closing of the H.E. Gritman Senior Center. We have no plans to close the Senior Center. We believe it is too important, not only to our seniors, but to our community as well. The Senior Center is also a Community Center. It is not just a place for those over the age of 55; we have had activities for all ages. Although the focus of our center is to provide healthy lunches three times a week mainly for seniors, anyone is welcome to join us for...

    Updated Feb 1, 2019

Due to there being no local cable company, the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague fall athletic events were unable to be broadcast on television this year. But LRS Athletic Director Greg Whitmore says that he has been working to develop the ability to livestream LRS athletic events, and hopes to have equipment installed by the first LRS basketball game so that games can be streamed on the NFHS Network. Whitmore says this will allow friends and family from around the country and the world to watch LRS sporting events. A subscription is...
