  • One team has to win

    Dale Anderson|Updated Oct 27, 2016

I read an obituary the other day and the saddest part of the notice wasn’t the death of a 70 something male. The sad part was that this guy grew up in the Midwest and was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. How long this guy waited for the Cubs to get back to the World Series and he won’t be around on earth anyway to enjoy it. I didn’t notice but maybe all of the excitement of a 103 win regular season and being victorious in the NL Division series took its toll. You can wait a lifeti...

  • Restore Article I, the framers’ intent of balanced government

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Oct 27, 2016

As a farmer and a student of American history, few things are as satisfying as wrapping up the last few weeks’ harvest at my family’s hop farm in Central Washington. Thomas Jefferson once wrote to John Adams in 1787: “I think our governments will remain virtuous for many centuries; as long as they are chiefly agricultural.” While I admit some bias, I tend to agree. 240 years into the experiment of American democracy, we enjoy the fruition of the efforts of citizen farmers such as Jefferson and Adams, who played prominent role...

  • Take a page from Gerald Ford’s playbook

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Oct 27, 2016

It’s D-Day for American voters. With Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump carrying unusually low approval ratings and having a deep antipathy for one another, no matter which one ultimately is elected, the nation will be bitterly polarized. Hopefully, each has a plan to bring us back together after Nov. 8. America thrives on a peaceful transfer of power. It is one of the important traditions, which has been handed down since John Adams succeeded George Washington on March 4, 1797. For guidance, Clinton and Trump ought to look t...

  • Honoring the right to vote

    Updated Oct 27, 2016

You need to vote in the up coming election. If you do not, you are saying all those who have given the supreme sacrifice have done it in vain for our country. Okay, you do not like the candidates. Then you run for office and change it. If you do not vote it is a vote for the one who wins. Become active in your government because you have a vote and a right to be heard. If you do not exercise this right then no complaining allowed. You may decide it is to far to walk to drop your ballot in the box, or I do not have time, or I...

  • Spreading gospel instead of gossip

Reverend Charles Jingling, RMA President|Updated Oct 27, 2016

This is the season of political madness. Character assassination has become a staple in our political system. It does not matter if the charges are true or verifiable. The press reports the accusation and a person’s reputation is ruined. Yet, the public seems to have a fascination with these reports. It reminds me of how during the time of Jesus’ ministry, He was accused of several things, such as associating with tax collectors and sinners and saying that He healed by the power of Satan instead of admitting that He was fro...
