  • Solution required to protect Dreamers

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated Sep 14, 2017

When President Trump’s administration announced that it would give six months to wind down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, many young people called ‘Dreamers,’ immigrants who grew up in the U.S., were once again faced with uncertainty regarding their future here. In Washington state, there are about 17,000 Dreamers. I have sat down with some of these young people right here in Central Washington, and their stories are compelling. Many were brought here as young children without their say or knowl...

  • Issues with immigration

    Updated Sep 14, 2017

After the twin towers fell, Bin Laden said that his goal was to bankrupt America. I would assume that he would be proud as would his followers. Our debt that we recognize is $20 trillion and climbing because we keep making mistakes that would please his followers. We keep foolishly allowing immigrants into our country that don’t speak English. This gives us the added expense of having five million school-age children who must be taught English in our classrooms. That takes valuable teacher time! We must print materials in m...

I want to personally thank Rod, Jani and Alexis Melcher for their determination in keeping Cole alive in each of us through their unwavering love of kids and their kind-hearted souls. How many of us would show up to one of the largest community events days after tragedy struck and pour t...

  • Legislative Commentary

Senator Mark Schoesler, Ninth District|Updated Sep 14, 2017

For a while this past month my office at the state Capitol was taking call after call from people who had been transferred there by an automated phone call, better known as a “robo-call”. Some callers were surprised to find a real person on the other end of the line; others were upset because they thought the robo-calls originated from our office. Not true – I’ve only used this technology during legislative sessions to invite constituents to take part in telephone town-hall meetings. The recent wave of callers seemed to be p... Full story

  • Family values in the community

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Fundraiser to benefit local family When a family member is in need, it’s second nature to respond with love and support. One of the benefits of a small school and community is that everyone feels a familial responsibility to take care of one another. If a classmate or neighbor needs help, the whole school or the whole community unifies and responds. Last week, LRHS senior Crystal Silva was brought to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital with an infection in her brain. She fell into a coma-like state and has since opened her eye...
