  • Website offering license renewals fool some drivers

    Updated Jun 20, 2013

Several websites targeting drivers across the country are promising easy online driver license renewals, but appear to be delivering little except credit card charges. These companies are using paid advertising results on the major Internet search providers like Google and Yahoo to lure customers away from the official Department of Licensing (DOL) website. This is leading to extra fees paid to unknown companies who appear to be offering little more than services already available for free using the official DOL website....

    Stephen McFadden|Updated Jun 20, 2013

When Dan Duff was a high school teen looking for a way to earn a few bucks to support his growing golf habit, he turned to then course manager Ron Barker for a little help. Barker promptly set him to mowing the course to help pay for Duff’s first set of golf clubs. From that effort grew a love for the game of golf and an interest in the proper care and grooming of a golf course. Little did the Ritzville High School student know that his early golf excursions would lead him t...

  • New Ritz Theatre upgrades, goals

    Updated Jun 20, 2013

In 22 and one half years of residing in Adams County, this is my first letter to the Editor. There seems to be some confusion surrounding the New Ritz Theatre project that the Ritzville Downtown Development Association has undertaken. Hollywood movie studios are discontinuing the distribution of first run films in the 35mm format and going to the all-digital system. The cost for digital conversion is anywhere from $80,000 to $125,000 depending on what you purchase. Herb and Shannon Benzel rescued the building in 1983 and...

  • Hospital needed, but not for the price tag

    Updated Jun 20, 2013

I have no argument with Eric Walker’s assessment of our community wanting and needing a Critical Access Hospital. My concern is with his assumption that we need a $10 million hospital. For a district that is getting smaller and older as we speak. A 30-year, $10 million debt is long and large. I am extremely concerned with the following: Resolution No. 13-03 Bonds to construct a new hospital/clinic Section 7. Alteration of Expenditures. If the commission shall subsequently determine that federal, state or local circumstances,...

  • It’s Not Easy...

    Dale Anderson|Updated Jun 20, 2013

I’m sorry that I missed a column last week but I did have a good excuse. I haven’t missed many but every now and then cyberspace has been a problem. While on other occasions there has been a death in the family to contend with. Last week my brother-in-law’s mom passed away in Montana. So I went to a funeral last Tuesday in Butte. Since a lot of my time was dedicated to driving half way across Montana I didn’t get around to putting my thoughts about sports anywhere in particu...

  • Legislative Commentary

    Updated Jun 20, 2013

I’ve had many meetings with our new governor this year. While we don’t see eye-to-eye on many of the issues, we’ve been able to have civil conversations. That’s why I was taken aback Tuesday when Governor Inslee took some hard shots at our Senate coalition in the course of telling the news media that a second special session would begin the next day. You may have seen or heard reports that Olympia is bracing for a state-government shutdown in case the Senate and House of Representatives can’t get a new budget in place by...
