  • Swinging into 2016 Ladies Golf, the Café

    Sandra Weigand, Guest Commentator|Updated May 12, 2016

This year’s Ladies’ Golf season has opened and is in full swing. We welcomed several new participants this year. Our first Monday, we enjoyed an excellent brunch at the Fairway Café, which is now under new management. The food is good and Chris, the manager, is creative. Try the burrito bowl one day and you will agree. I am gluten intolerant, and she has produced meals for me that were delicious, and that’s not easy without bread, gravy, ketchup or pasta. She makes an award-worthy potato salad as well as a variety of crispy...

  • One Nation, Under God

Congressman Dan Newhouse, Fourth District|Updated May 12, 2016

Religious freedom is at the very core of our constitutional republic. It is one of the primary reasons that brave men and women of faith crossed the ocean to found our country. Last Thursday, May 5, we marked the National Day of Prayer, acknowledging that prayer has been a critical part of the fabric of American history. Recently, I had the opportunity to address a group of pastors visiting the nation’s capital, including pastors from Central Washington. I am appreciative of these pastors and all who pray for their r...

  • Awakening of Undercover Boss

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated May 12, 2016

One of the highest rated television programs during Super Bowl Week last February was “Undercover Boss”. According to the Nielsen ratings, it drew 6.8 million viewers. By contrast, the Greatest Super Bowl Halftime Shows had 5.72 million. Viewers’ watched CEOs leave their comfortable corporate offices, disguise themselves as workers, and risk the humiliation of doing something wrong. It is all about an awakening to what really happens on the company’s front lines. Too often people see “big bosses” as aloof and guiding the...

    Updated May 12, 2016

Saturday, May 14, marks the 24th anniversary of one of America’s great days of giving, the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Letter carriers walk through the community everyday, often coming face to face with a sad reality for too many, hunger. So, each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. These donations go directly to local food pantries to provide food to people in Ritzville who need our help. L...

  • Dangerous intersection by the schools

    Updated May 12, 2016

The corner of Eighth and Chelan is an accident waiting to happen. Today it did. It could have been much worse, fortunately there were no pedestrians at the time. Several times every day we see cars speeding through this intersection, failing to yield, failing to stop. The speeders are students as well as parents. Compounding the problem is parents dropping children at the daycare on the corner and children and pets in the street. How about a four way stop to slow everyone down and ensure safety at the corner. It is a school...
