    The Ritzville Little League is set to host the second annual Ritzville Little League Day on Saturday, May 12. The event starts at 10 a.m. for team and individual pictures and everyone is invited to attend. Pictures are to be taken at the playground, across from the Little League Park.     The Ritzville Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a general membership meeting on Thursday, May 10 at 12 p.m. in the Casuela’s Grill banquet room.     The Ritzville Volunteer Ambulance Association is hosting an EMT plant sale on May 10-12 in front of the Ritzville fire station on First Avenue.   • LRS tennis continues on to districts

    The LRS tennis team travels to Shadle Park on May 10-11 to compete in the district tournament. The Broncos have had a successful season and plan to continue their success to move on to the state level. The girls’ team finished second in the league, losing only to Reardan in a match up earlier this season. The team is receiving a trophy for this accomplishment and duplicates should be ordered so every school, Lind, Ritzville and Sprague, can receive recognition.     Lind High School senior, Mackenzie Ellis, has been awarded the Archer Daniels Midland Company scholarship of $1,000. Ellis is the daughter of Brian and Suzette Ellis and plans to pursue a degree in Agriculture Communications after high school graduation. The National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Organization offers several scholarships to members who plan to further their education after high school.   • Extended hours for liquor sales unwise

    During my lifetime I have watched the sale of adult beverages go from being controlled by selling it only at state controlled outlets and lounges that closed at 12 a.m. They were not open on Sundays! Beer had 3.2 percent alcohol content and wine was closely monitored. Also, alcohol was not sold on election days during voting hours. There were still remnants of illegal moonshine stills that people had used for home use and to make some money. I was greatly surprised to find, not only did our churches not come together for it, as they do for Good Friday, but, not one of them was planning on joining in.     Some junior high students are involved with the FFA. Recently, the FFA held its State Trap Shoot in Wenatchee. Ritzville sent two teams. The second team consisted of Johnny Carson, Hailey Oestreich, and Taylor White. The first team had Jacob Anderson, Andrew Witt, Joel Anderson, Ryan Frederick, and Skyler Oestreich.     Thelma Jean (Koch) Sprenger passed from this world on Monday, April 30 at the age of 75, after a month-long battle with illness. She was born May 23, 1936, the youngest of 10 children, to Johann and Susannah (Jukert) Koch. She was born and raised in Ritzville, where she graduated in 1954. In June 1954, she married Charles McCormick and had two children from this union, David and Darlene.     Palmer Phillips, a senior at Ritzville High School, received the 2012 DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award during the Ritzville FFA banquet on April 26.
