  • New Common Core standards set for Washington schools

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Mar 24, 2016

Washington State Legislature and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) have created new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Designed to improve education in areas currently deemed to be lacking, the standards are in computer science, Washington state tribal history, physical education/health, and financial education. The necessity for the computer science standards, to be released in July or August, is supported by the void between the amount of computer science jobs available and the amount of competent...

  • Don’t be upset

    Dale Anderson|Updated Mar 24, 2016

Let me assume you have been following the NCAA tournament. Most folks are rabid about the games and they’ve filled out multiple brackets understanding that there is a good chance that a 12 seed will upend a five seed. How is your bracket looking? Did you have Michigan State in the final four? I saw a couple of upsets on TV; well at least some thought they were upsets. Of course, those games I saw were won by Gonzaga. I think there are a few people that have wondered just h...

In 2015...

  • Unaccountable bureaucrats hurt community based financing

    Updated Mar 24, 2016

Think for a moment about all the financial products you use on a regular basis: credit cards, a mortgage, an auto loan, perhaps short-term consumer credit. Now imagine a single unelected bureaucrat dictating the terms of all of those products. Imagine if that bureaucrat could cancel any financial agreement they didn’t like, for any reason. If one bureaucrat had that much power, then banks and mortgage institutions would write, and rewrite, the terms of their products to that bureaucrat’s preferences, not for the best int...

  • Owen served “Our Washington” well

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Mar 24, 2016

For the last 20 years, Lt. Gov. Brad Owen (D) has served Washington well. Now, he is retiring and leaving the state senate as he found it, a dignified place to debate and enact public policy. Owen, a former convenience store owner in Shelton, will not seek re-election. It will be the first time in 40 years that his name will not be on the November ballot. He was elected to the state house in 1976 and then to the senate in 1983. Owen is currently the longest serving lieutenant governor in the country; however, that is not the...

  • Saying “yes” for our community

    Updated Mar 24, 2016

Given the opportunity to vote, we do. Given the opportunity to say yes to school, police and fire protection, hospital services, parks and our pool, we say yes. Our community is our home. Our local services enrich our well being. Our schools nurture and prepare our youth for a full future of which they can be contributors. Some of these fine young people return here to raise the next generation. It is important that they do, as the younger generation takes its place to uphold our community. The day will come when the present...

  • The marathon for the White House

    Updated Mar 24, 2016

A few months ago one of many headlines was: “The race for the Whitehouse.” That was a misnomer, as marathon might have been more appropriate. As with any contentious election this one will go down in history for its juvenile sparring and grade school language on the bad side. This has surprised me. The Blue party is down to two candidates who have played softball in their debates. Maybe this is because Hillary has legal problems possibly facing her. The mainstream media has done their best to give certain candidates more tim...

  • Drama teacher weighs in on district bond

    Updated Mar 24, 2016

There has been much discussion in recent months concerning the Ritzville School District’s bond proposal. Here are my thoughts as an educator as to why we need to vote YES. I serve as the high school drama teacher. It is wonderful that our small school has been able to offer this fine arts option to our students. The benefits of student learning experiences in the arts are undeniably academic. According to the National Assembly of State Arts, there are “six major types of benefits associated with study of the arts and stu...

  • Bond is necessary to improve school facilities

    Updated Mar 24, 2016

We have heard people ask, “Why should I vote for the school bond issue? We vote for an M&O Levy. That should be enough to keep the school in good condition.” Yes, an M&O Levy is routine maintenance. It is similar to your monthly household budget. You keep the lawn mowed and the house painted along with other day to day needs of your home. At some point, however, your house is 20 or 30 years old and things start to fall apart no matter how well you have maintained it over the years. Your monthly budget probably doesn’t allow f...
