  • John Wayne Trail to remain open

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

In a recent statement Representative Joe Schmick said he will no longer attempt to close the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. This issue was first brought to light when a mere spelling error in the 2015 budget kept the 130-mile portion of the trail from being closed. The Tekoa Trail and Trestle Association coordinated public meetings with Schmick and fellow 9th District Representative Mary Dye to give a platform for landowners and supporters to voice their opinions. This was followed by 14 cities passing a resolution in support of...

  • Additional gym is unneccessary

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

A third gym? Really? What Ritzville needs is an auditorium with real seats and a stage, not pull out bleachers and folding chairs. Ritzville has produced one professional athlete to my knowledge. But Ritzville High School has produced artists of all disciplines over the years, writers, musicians, artists and performers. Isn’t it time to turn STEM into STEAM? I’ve heard all the arguments for athletics but the arts also promote self esteem, cooperation and team building. A strong arts program stresses critical thinking, cre...

  • Drama, Music deserve recognition

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

Compliments to the drama students at the recent performance of “Mmmbeth.” They brought Shakespeare alive amidst witchery, idiocy and just plain old fashioned fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the play and am certain those thespians worked countless hours memorizing their lines. Just wondering, where was the Ritzville Journal? There’s more to education at LRS than sports (though I’m a huge fan of athletics). And where are photos of the pep band members? There are some very talented, dedicated musicians in the band. Students, whether...

  • Avoiding bad trip down memory lane

    Don C. Brunell, Business Commentator|Updated Jan 28, 2016

In 2001, Boeing shocked state and local leaders announcing it was relocating its headquarters to Chicago. Suddenly, the company with its deep roots in our Puget Sound region was housed on the shores of Lake Michigan. That move coupled with Boeing’s worldwide search for sites to build its next generation of commercial airplanes prompted then Gov. Gary Locke (D) to form a competitiveness council. Its mission was to recommend ways to improve our state’s competitiveness primarily so Boeing’s production and jobs would remai...

  • The impact of grades in the classroom

Emma Aldrich, LRHS Student Correspondent|Updated Jan 28, 2016

Many students today associate school with grades before they associate school with learning. The idea that some students fight to raise a grade without first investing their time in learning seems contradictory, but the allure of grades to achievement based learners is a strong incentive to work harder in the classroom. Grades were invented not to help students learn, but instead in an attempt to quantify learning. The first instance of grading is credited to Yale University. Brian Palmer, an author on slate.com, explained,...

  • Lady Tigercats have a busy week with four games

    Katelin Davidson|Updated Jan 28, 2016

The LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus Lady Tigercats did not get a break last week as they competed in four games within five days. The fast-paced schedule left the team worn down for their last game of the week after playing three tough games. The LWK team started out their week against Garfield-Palouse in a nonleague game on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The two teams had faced each other days prior during a league game, and Head Coach Jeff Gates said both games were very similar. The Lady...

Their week held two nonleague wins and a tough league loss to the St. George’s Lady Dragons. Last Tuesday on Jan. 19, the team took to the court to face the Connell Lady Eagles. • Actions speak louder than words on reducing burdensome federal regulations

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

If you listened to President Obama’s final State of the Union speech earlier this month, you would think that the President was focused on reducing burdensome federal regulations that stymie private economic growth. In his address, the President said something I, along with many Americans, can agree with: “I believe a thriving private sector is the lifeblood of our economy. I think there are outdated regulations that need to be changed. There is red tape that needs to be cut.” During seven years in the White House, if only...
