YAKIMA – The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos suffered a loss in a quarterfinal matchup on Nov. 10 at the WIAA 2B State Tournament in Yakima.
This loss meant that the Broncos couldn't finish better than a fifth-place finish in the tournament. To get to that the fifth/sixth-place game, they had to defeat league rivals Liberty (Spangle).
Which is exactly what Lind-Ritzville/Sprague did.
"It's so exciting to be able to redeem ourselves after losing to (Liberty) in the Districts," Lind-Ritzville/Sprague coach Cari Galbreath said. "But it's also really cool that we have two teams from the same district battling here on the last day of state. Liberty's a great team, a great program and it's rewarding to know you've earned it against a good team."
After beating the Lancers – the No. 8-seeded Adna Pirates were awaiting the Broncos in the fifth/sixth place contest.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague began the match as best as they could – jumping out to a 2-0 match lead over Adna with set scores of 29-27 and 25-11.
The Pirates then decided that it was comeback season.
Adna got slight wins in the third and fourth sets (25-21, 25-20) to comeback from two down to tie the match and force a fifth set.
Set 5 (played to 15) was all Adna – with the Pirates winning 15-8 to secure the comeback and fifth-place honors.
Although the Broncos were on the wrong end of a comeback, they still walked out with a trophy and sixth-place honors for the 2B state tournament.
