Three of four LRS golfers already qualified for sub-district tournament

LRS’s golf team has traveled both south and north in the past two weeks. Last Tuesday, April 16, found the team traveling to the far southeast corner of Washington to match strokes with host Asotin at a Clarkston golf course.

The team is down to four members for the rest of the year: two men and two women. At Clarkston, Morgan Brausen shot an 88 for the 18-hole course. Dirk Dahlman more than matched him with his own 85. On the women’s side, Molly Hane carded 126 – which matches the score needed for a woman to compete in the sub-district tournament at Deer Park on May 6. Baylor Moore, a freshman playing in her first 18-hole match, put a 134 on her card.

Coach Nick Weishaar said he was pleased with the progress of the team, as small as it is. He explained that Brausen and Dahlman are 10th and 11th in the league at this point, putting both in contention to make a deep playoff run if they continue to play well.

They had that opportunity a week later on Monday, April 22, as the group headed north to Deer Park. In that match, Brausen turned the table on his teammate, scoring an 85 to Dahlman’s 87. Their female teammates continued to play well: Hane shot a 129, while Moore took four strokes off her score from the week before with a 130.

Weishaar explained that to qualify for the playoffs, men must have at least one 18-hole score of 116 or better to get to the sub-district matches. Women must bring in an 18-hole score of 126 or better. So Hane is in and Moore is only four strokes short, while both Brausen and Dahlman have already qualified.

Once the playoffs start, the scores finishing in the top half of the field move on to the district matches. Weishaar sounded optimistic, even after a long day and trip back from Deer Park. The team’s next match, which counts toward qualifying for the postseason, requires a trip to Blanchard, Idaho on April 30, where the Cusick team will be the host.
