John Christopher Doherty

John Christopher Doherty died peacefully in Anacortes on Sept. 23 with his family by his side. He was born on Jan. 4, 1938, in Houston, Texas, to Anna and Francis Doherty. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy.

He was known to many as just “Texas John” through his barbecue and catering business. John enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He is now cheering them on from Heaven.

John spent many summers fishing on the Kenai River in Alaska with his fishing buddies. John is survived by his wife Irene of 48 years in Anacortes; daughters Peggy Cross of Kennewick and Katey (Justin) Von Hagel of Anacortes; grandchildren Hailey and Hunter Cross, Allyson and John-Fritz Von Hagel, his two brothers Francis and Tommy Doherty of Pearland, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anna and Francis Doherty and brother Michael.

John was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Anacortes. He was laid to rest Sept. 28 at Enterprise Cemetery, in Ferndale.
