Lady Broncos prepare for first round of District Tournament

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos are preparing for the first round of the District Tournament after claiming two on the road wins in a non-league doubleheader against Wilbur-Creston (WC) on Thursday, May 4.

Head Coach Todd O’Brien said the Lady Broncos earned the victories by showcasing powerful hitting during the games.

The Lady Broncos had 16 hits in the first game, which allowed them to score 11 runs.

During the game, Tessa O’Brien hit three singles. Emily Rosen, Kaylee Pavone and Hannah Brittian claimed two each, while Lacey Miller hit one.

Alisha Baker claimed a double, and Emily Kinney and Emma Aldrich each hit a single and a double.

Despite the success on offense, O’Brien said the team needs to reduce the number of pitching and throwing errors in order to prevent giving up free bases. The errors allowed WC nine bases by seven walks and two hit batters, he explained.

O’Brien stated the Lady Broncos remained strong on defense throughout the game and turned two double plays during the competition.

The consistency on defense allowed the team to maintain an early lead, he added.

As the game progressed, O’Brien said the Lady Broncos continued to be successful on offense, preventing WC from narrowing the scoring gap.

The LRS team claimed the win 11-7 over WC.

The Lady Broncos continued to make solid contact with the ball in the second game as Tessa ended the day 6 for 8 from the plate.

In the second game Tessa hit three singles. Rosen, Alarah Pierce-Pulliam and Kinney each hit two.

Baker, Pavone and Brittian had one hit each.

O’Brien said the pitching improved in the second game, which reduced the amount of free bases to three for WC.

The team maintained strong defense as they only allowed WC to score one run in the game.

O’Brien said he is pleased with the team’s improvement on the field, as they reduced the average number of fielding and throwing errors.

With increased confidence on the mound, the Lady Broncos continued to outplay WC and claimed the win 10-1.

In preparation for the post season, the Lady Broncos will focus on improving basic fundamentals and hitting in hopes of advancing to the second weekend of the tournament.

The Lady Broncos hosted the first round of districts on Tuesday, May 9.

Tekoa-Rosalia competed against Mary Walker at 3 p.m. and the LRS team took on the winner of the game.

Results of the game were unavailable at press time.
