Legendary hole-in-one at Ritzville Golf Course

If you golf, you know that the dream, before the one of you winning a PGA championship, is for a hole-in-one with several of your closest golfing buddies watching. That awe-infused moment must be life changing.

It’s Babe Ruth hitting his first grand slam, Tom Clancy selling his one-millionth book, Seahawks kicking Bronco hiney in the 2014 Super Bowl, Marie Osmond losing fifty pounds. You get the drift: momentous.

Last Wednesday, while playing the daily round of tee-off-at-noon golf for guys, DW stepped up to the tee box on Fairway 16, carefully balanced his ball on a tee, assumed the position, and slammed that little round dimpled dude over a giant, massive pine tree, around a corner, down a fairway, onto the green where it meandered toward the flag, and plop!

A hole-in-one.

What makes this even more of a wonder is that the hole was 18. Yes, he completely circumvented three fairways and two greens. It was pure magic.

DW’s example of pure, unrivaled, gifted athleticism (not to mention his courageous and heroic flirtation with scoffing at PGA rules which possibly carries with it some federal prison time), was witnessed by my husband, Mark, and a few other guys who have always held DW in high esteem.

Never has his perch been so exclusive. He is our resident Tiger Woods.

Last Friday, a couple of days following this wondrous event, the usual gaggle gathered at the Fairway Café for breakfast. This is a regular Friday morning event, and DW is a popular member of our group.

We spent considerable time reliving that memorable episode and discussing whether that was a fair way (no pun) to shorten the game by a few holes and aid in a lower overall score, ie. “I sunk the ball on 18 with a score of 62”.

It’s a teensy bit deceptive but sounds good. The majority agreed that it wasn’t a noble idea. But still, DW had performed a magical golf move and we all admired it.

I laud DW for his creativity and talent. Besides, he’s a great guy who has gracefully deflected a lot of ribbing over this event.

He’s to be admired for many attributes, not the least of which is being Ritzville’s most recent hole-in-one legend.
