Broncos continue to dominate the field

The LRS Broncos remain undefeated after their fourth league game of the season last Friday, showing marked improvement in several areas of play.

The Bronco defense only allowed Wilbur-Creston to move the ball 59 yards during their last game.

The Wildcats, though up from eight-man football this year, bring a very athletic team to the field and the Head Coach Greg Whitmore is proud the Broncos team defeated them so decisively.

“We have a lot of areas we can improve, which is encouraging we beat a pretty athletic team 49 nothing and still have a lot of significant areas to improve,” he said.

Whitmore said the Broncos need to work on finishing blocks and work on minimizing mistakes if they want to continue to be successful against the rest of their opponents.

The Broncos had three fumbles during the game, which gave the Wildcats excellent field position but the defense was able to hold.

On defense the Broncos allowed the Wildcats one third-down conversion out of 12 after an encroachment by linebacker Andrew Witt.

Highlights for the Broncos during their game other than their unbreakable defense included their offense.

With a total of 303 yards, 231 of them from rushing attempts, the boys were in full control of the game.

“Anytime you get, especially 200-yards that’s a good day rushing,” Whitmore said.

Matthew Leffel also had a great performance, converting on every extra point kick and placing kickoffs deep in Wildcat territory.

The punt cover by the LRS boys was also impressive, regularly threatening the to block the kick by the Wildcats.

The Broncos scored late in the first quarter with Hugh Hennings running five yards for the first Broncos touchdown. Hennings would score again in the second quarter on a 35-yard run.

The first half scoring would be rounded out by Jacob Saetre who would run 20 yards bringing the Bronco lead to 21-0.

In the second half the Broncos would finish a drive with Hennings running one-yard with three minutes left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Saetre would connect with Cort Ruzicka for 22 yards and another Broncos touchdown.

Mason Brausen would then take a hand-off from Bryce Esser and score again for the Broncos off a 23-yard run.

The highlight play from the Broncos defense was when Kyle Gimmaka returned a Wildcat punt 46 yards for the seventh touchdown of the game.

This week the Broncos hit the road to Riverside to take on the Northwest Christian Crusaders.

This will be the Crusaders’ second year of football in the league, despite the youth of their program Whitmore expects them to put up a good battle.

The Crusaders have several good athletes but have one in particular that Whitmore will be looking to shut down.

“We’ll be trying to make other people hurt us and not let any big plays out of him,” Whitmore said.

For this weeks game the Broncos will be focusing on minimizing turnovers and having the defense and special teams contribute to the scoring.

Otherwise, Whitmore said, general improvement and execution will be the focus of the team.
