Broncos crush the Chargers in first home game

Fans were treated to a decisive LRS victory on Friday when the Broncos faced off against the Mary-Walker Chargers.

After focusing all week on the team, Head Coach Greg Whitmore said the Broncos looked better than they had in their season opening game against Davenport but further improvement by the team was still necessary. Whitmore said the team needed a reminder to remain focused for the game during the pre-game warm-up sessions.

“We did take a step forward and played better than we did against Davenport,” Whitmore said.

Whitmore said the Bronco boys played a little more consistent. The game was not as much of a rollercoaster ride with big highs and lows and the team was more efficient at playing the game as well.

After causing a fumble in the opening kick-off Lind-Ritzville/Sprague took over on offense with great field position. They were able to score about five minutes later with Hugh Hennings running two yards.

The Broncos would score two more times during the first quarter, with Andrew Witt running 32-yards and Dane Wahl scoring after a four-yard run.

LRS would dominate the second quarter, scoring on a 70-yard pass completion to Cort Ruzicka. The Broncos would lead 33-0 at the half after Jacob Saetre intercepted a Charger pass for a touchdown with seconds left in the half.

Hennings would stretch the lead to 39, scoring on a 29 yard run 29 seconds into the third quarter. After this Whitmore began rotating in the Bronco reserves. Mary-Walker would score early in the fourth after a long drive against the Bronco auxiliaries.

The boys weren’t done yet though.

Bryce Esser would complete a pass to Damien Rouleau for a 67-yard touchdown to further extend the lead. Another pass to Kyle Gimmaka from Esser resulted in a 19-yard touchdown, which brought the game to its final score of 51-6 in favor of the Broncos.

The Bronco offense drove a total of 368-yards in 38 plays during their face-off with the Chargers, which was evenly spread between the LRS players.

Ruzicka led the Bronco receiving with a total of 89-yards and Mason Brausen lead the Broncos in rushing with 63-yards in four attempts. Hennings led in scoring with two of the Broncos’ eight touchdowns.

The Broncos will take on Tekoa-Rosalia in their next game. Whitmore expects it to be a similar game for the Broncos.

“They’re probably struggling the most in the league right now,” Whitmore said.

Last year Tekoa-Rosalia played eight-man football and this is their first year playing 11-man football with a new coach. Whitmore also said they lost a lot of good athletes last year.

With that in mind Whitmore plans to focus his attention on continuing to build the Broncos in preparation for tougher opponents.
