Dragons prove to be a hand full

The St. George’s Dragons are all that, and well rested as they settle into their basketball groove.

The LRS Broncos discovered that in person Saturday when they fell in league play, 63-41.

Head coach Dustan Arlt expected a struggle.

“Really at this point I don’t know if I would say I was surprised by the outcome,” he said. “It’s really not much different from when we played them the first time last year.”

Connor O’Neill was the bright spot for the Broncos. He scored 20 points in the game and is averaging 17 points a game so far this season.

“He was really the only one scoring for us,” Arlt said.

With three weeks more practice and game time than the Broncos, St. George’s worked like a well oiled machine. Arlt’s goal is to dismantle the machine when they play later in the season or in the tournaments.

“We will get there with them,” he said. “And we will be more competitive with them later in the year. They are really good on offense and when they are on defense it seems like we get out there against them and kind of freeze and stand there a little.”

Dylan Hartz scored six points in the contest. Kyle Canaday had five while Tyler Frederick and Cort Ruzicka eachs cored four. Jacob Saetre had two.

Friday the Broncos looked much stronger in their 68-58 win over Reardan.

Several times during the game they led by 20 points. One Reardan played kept the Indians in the game. Skylar Peone scored 32.

Ryan Whitmore led the LRS scoring with 14. O’Neill delivered 13 and Hartz added 11. Ruzicka and Frederick were successful too, with 10 points each.

“We looked more like a basketball team,” Arlt said. “It was good to get off to a good start, 16-3. There were a couple of different times we got it to a 20-point lead. I think we relaxed a little, but it felt more like a 20-point win.”

The Broncos have two nonleague games this week after a four-day rest for the holiday.
